Weaning not going very well

Hi, this is my second time so you'd think I'd be a bit more chilled. dS 1 was a dream to wean, only purred for about a week, he ate everything from day one and still does at 3yo. He was so good I was probably a bit smug about it.

DS 2 has suspected allergies (terrible reflux while ebf) and so we're going a bit slower, but it's so difficult. He's 6montha on Saturday and we started a week or so ago with baby rice/porridge (that plum organic one) uder advice of pediatrician. That was fine, although he's been totally constipated ever since. Other than that he has refused mashed sweet potato twice, roaste sweet potato wedges, puréed carrot, steamed csrrot sticks, mashed parsnip, whole banana, steamed pear slices. The only thing he's taken in has been a little mashed banana in the baby rice, and some stewed pear purée. Most of the time, he takes it in his mouth, screws up his face saying YAK, then either gags and spots it out or blows it out in a big raspberry. It's come as a bit of a surprise after DS1. I know it's early days but is this within the realms of normal? I've never seen a baby turn down purées before, they all do that bird face open mouth thing don't they?

Reassurance needed! Thanks

Has he ever been checked for tongue tie sleep? Sometimes the symptoms of cows milk protein allergy/intolerance, tongue tie and reflux can be very similar.

ilovetosleep · 07/10/2014 22:15

Yes, I think it might have been you that has asked me this elsewhere actually. He had 100% TT cut at 10days old, which reformed as has since been cut twice more by mr griffiths at Southampton. It has grown back a third time but to a lesser degree this last time and he said it would likely keep happening so no real point in trying again and again.

Have you been through the whole TT issue? I've found it all v stressful and noone anywhere has acknowledged that there might e a link between his reflux and feeding aversion (he mainly bfs at night, mostly refuses during the day except to get to sleep)and the TT. I hate the thought that I'm medicating (omeprazole) and severely restricting my diet (dairy and soya free, about to go gluten and egg free too) for no good reason.

In your experience could the TT be causing these difficulties with solids too?
Thanks

This is completely normal as far as I know for a multiple allergy child.

My DS was just like this between 6-12 months. However, as time went on things have improved ALOt. Give it time. Don't force them to eat.

StepDoor · 07/10/2014 22:24

What jilted has said, has no academic bases at all.

There is a HUGE difference between allergies and tongue tie. My DS had his tongue and lip tie lasered, but still had severe reflux and multiple allergies. Yes, it might be that children with multiple allergies on average are more likely to have tongue ties, but that doesn't mean tongue tie is causing the allergy.

The allergic reaction that happens is clear as day light in most instances, with something like hives or green pops etc.

ilovetosleep · 07/10/2014 22:34

The thing is, we have only just started out with this whole allergy thing, I have no idea if he really is allergic though. He doesn't have green poo, or skin conditions, he is just miserable most of the time and refluxy. Omeprazole is helping. What I do know is that his feeding and subsequent wind and reflux improved vastly after the TT revisions but soon deteriorated again. BUT I'm also totally in denial about him being allergic as I so desperately don't want it to be the case.

Stepdoor Am v Interetested in this link between TT and allergies. Never heard it before. So TT is common in people with allergies? Is this true?

JJJ do you mind me asking about your weaning experiences and how you got through it?

Can't actually remember saying that the tt causes allergies Step. What I was trying to say was if a baby is having difficulties, it can be difficult to tell if its tt, reflux or an intolerance as things like crying, wind and difficulty with weaning could be a symptom of one of those or all of those. Perhaps I phrased it badly Smile

ilovetosleep · 07/10/2014 22:36

X post. Yes you're right it's a minefield as impossible to figure out what is causing the symptoms...

I've weaned 2, one on purees at 17 weeks. He had upper lip tie and tt. One at 23 weeks when she grabbed a sandwich.

DS was terrible to wean. Was an absolute age before he todo to lumps or chewing...

TallRedhead · 08/10/2014 17:22

Could try baby led weaning? Let him go at his pace. Great book.
linky website explains all but book (advertised on the right on the site) reassures/answers all questions you may have.
I did it with dd and currently with ds 8 months old. It is so simple and easy for lazy mummy like me!! Wink

ilovetosleep · 08/10/2014 18:39

I wild love to blw (did with DS1 after one boring week of mash) but it wouldn't be true blw as have to be cautious introducing new foods one at a time. BUT I'm comparing to ds1 who somehow knew how to chew and swallow from day one where as I am findin all this spittin and gagging a bit demoralising. I thought it would only last a couple of days but its been nearly 2 weeks... I just wasnt sure if tht was normal.

I have the total sample size of one :) but ds was severely tongue tied (cut at 4 weeks) and an absolute nightmare to wean. We did baby led weaning and it was months before he managed to manoeuvre food around his mouth, usually he would scream or just hold it in his mouth until we removed it. In hindsight I think it was something to do with his tie and having a high palate too.

I've been so scarred by his nightmare weaning that I'm loving going the traditional route with his sister, nearly 6 months. She's loving food!

Misty9 · 08/10/2014 18:52

Oh, and it doesn't matter if it's not 'true' baby led weaning yes, I was one of those purists, all the good it did me
Just do what works. So if he's not mad keen on purees just give him some suitable finger food and let him get on with it, spooning it in when he'll let you.
