BLW - Getting Started...

Hello... another BLW thread...

i started BLW yesterday and am so unsure of myself! I boiled come carrot sticks until they were soft, and let DS just do what he wanted with them - he sort of bit one abit, and I think he swallowed abit and gagged. He tried another then seemed bored, so I stopped it. Is that OK for day 1? not sure what i expected... Also, im not sure what other 1st foods to try. Been to the BLW blog, but want to make 100% sure im not going to make DS choke! Im a total novice, so anyone giving me complete step by step advice and what to expect would be great

I presume I can try - banana cut in 1/2 and peeled? skinned pear? do I need to skin? Batons of mango? batons of avacado? or just give DS an avacado? skin it?? What do I progress onto meat? How much should i expect DS to take? How long should I let him try?

Also... these porridge pancakes... is Organic adult porridge OK? The baby porridge had added sugar . is it OK to try as a 1st food? or is it more advanced stuff?

Thank you!

deep breaths, quootiepie...
DS gagged, didn't he, not choked. you would totally know the difference. gagging is fine, truly. and unfortunately you will never be 100% sure that DS won't choke, whether you use puree or solids. i did an infant resus class but you can look up resus advice online as well. that really helped my anxiety about choking.

what you can also do if you are feeling nervy is give him some apricot or peach or something while he's sitting in your lap. that way, you are holding onto the food and you might feel a bit more in control of the skin etc as it goes in.

on the main page of the blog is a list of foods that my daughter had tried by one month of BLW, so that should give you an idea. they are all on the finger foods list as well. you could try broccoli, green beans, potatoes, peaches, preas etc. i found the batons were sometimes pretty tricky for DD to hold onto if the fruit was soft or slippy, so veggies were good. dd still has trouble with avocado, though, so she has it mashed onto bread.
i'd also try to get some rice cakes and yes, the porridge pancakes are made with adult porridge oats.

give him another try with the carrot tomorrow, he sounds like he's doing really well. it's not for nutrition at the moment, so even if he's only playing with the food at the moment he's learning about it, which is the idea in the beginning. I think you'll be fine, quootiepie, even having a bite on the first day is good progress.

'preas' is a typo, btw, it's not 'peas'. i'd leave them a while longer. remember, it's a blog so you can tell what my dd was eating by the date. we started blw on the middle of june.

thanks ! now... are the pancakes OK to do say -now? or should I leave it abit? is bread ok? toast?

i'm sure all of them would be okay. toast rather than bread as bread can gunk up in their mouths. but to be honest for the first week or so i stuck to fruit and veg while DD got used to the idea.

ok - do I peel the pear? today I bought some pears, bananas, brocolli and a melon

I don't ususally peel the pear as I give it to Alfie in slices and the skin helps him grip it, but I guess others may differ.

i don't really peel things very much as it makes things difficult to grip. in fact, i can't think of anything i peel apart from carrots...
melon is lovely for their teeth straight from the fridge. check out the blog for a rather geeky post on how to present melon to your child and i think i explored the complex 'skin side - up or down?' in the peach entry.
also, can i recommend that you read the comments that people have left as more often than not that's where the best ideas are?
