...can they eat anything?

I am thinking of giving dd3 mashed potato instead of baby rice (HATE that stuff) and porridge

Yep i skipped the baby rice part completely. but dd wasn't that keen on mashed potato!

anniediv · 27/09/2006 10:03

Enid, none of my 3 liked rice (wallpaper paste) so I gave them mashed banana, fruit puree etc also mashed potato. I don't see there's anything wrong with that TBH. I'm sure someone else might disagree, but I would say go for it if you're just mashing it up with milk.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2006 10:04

You can go straight to tablescraps, enid. Skip baby rice, skip baby food entirely, just give finger foods and whatever everyone else is eating.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2006 10:05

You don't even need to mash! Give DD3 a traditional third-baby weaning experience - she can eat whatever she manages to snatch off the other two ...

anniediv · 27/09/2006 10:06

NQC, I didn't want to admit to that!!

Enid · 27/09/2006 10:06

she has v poor eye hand coordination though so can't quite believe she could manage finger foods in a few weeks

I want to try and give her mushed versions of our food though

Yes, you can give them anything (well, within reason).

DS2's first taste of food was banana, bitten (gummed) off while I held it up for him when he was nearly 28wo.

He has since had some mush, a few jars (I know, admitting that on an Enid thread is dodgy ) and loads of finger food. He's only really eaten anything much in the last week or so though.

hunkermunker · 27/09/2006 10:07

Can she get toys in her mouth, Enid?

Enid · 27/09/2006 10:07

how many weeks is 6 months? 24 weeks? or actually six months?

She might surprise you, re: hand-eye coordination. The BLW thing is really good, just skip purees and mash altogether, offer her whatever you've got that's not too hard (no peanut brittle), and leave her to it.

DS2 used to do a good line in gumming rare beef until it was grey, then giving it back. Yum!

The only problems, imo, with BLW babies, are a) the mess, which is bad at first and b) you end up with a child who will not be fed. We had pots of yogurt on the plane back from Canada, and he had to feed himself, I couldn't give it to him.

Enid · 27/09/2006 10:09

yes sort of

she shakes a lot though

she can manage to get bits of cloth in there

Best to wait until 26 weeks, which is the full 6 months. I managed 25.5, and then it took about a month before anything actually went in. Still, he's much much less work than DS1 was, who is 5, and still sometimes likes to be spoon-fed, if he can find a sucker to do it for him.

hunkermunker · 27/09/2006 10:10

26 weeks is six months.

coppertop · 27/09/2006 10:10

LOL at "traditional third-baby weaning experience". That's so true.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2006 10:11

Glad to hear I got the third-baby thing right - I only have two DSes, and am pretty sure I'm done, but I have a close friend with four DDs.

Enid · 27/09/2006 10:12

well that will mean dd2's birthday party

so maybe her first food will be cake

OP posts:
NotABustyOtter · 27/09/2006 10:17

i cannot believe two weeks makes a difference. ds4 is 7 months and seems to have eaten eveything from pesto to cake ! just gets food thrown his way and merrily gums it - no problem!

ShakespeareBlue · 28/09/2006 22:02

If you give the wrong thing, it kind of returns! DS started on apple puree @ 7 wks; DD started on rice at 5 wks. Don't throw hands in horror - she was hungry and screamed relentlessly - she ate rice and was happy. No brainer. You're on DD3 enid - you know what to do!

Emod · 16/10/2006 19:25

I have given her porridge today - quite keen until I but some banana in and then she wolfed it

also mashed potato - less keen but ate it

both were quite lumpy which didnt seem to be a problem.

I want to give her finger foods but she can't sit up well enough for the ikea highchair and its the only thing with a tray.

very very keen on her little cup of water though
