Gag reflex/not ready for lumps yet?

just wondering, also pondering BLW as well, but for the minute we're carrying on as we know, on friday I started with little lumps (from the jar had to go shopping) anyhow I was fully expecting a gag reflex, however between friday and today he's been sick 3 times after his dinner (and not just a little bit it's been projectile) today he was gagging as if to be sick again so I pureed the food and he was OK after this - so am thinking he's not ready for lumps?

when should u introduce lumpier/mashed foods? - he's 7 months now and I thought it was about the right time?

obviously thou I don't want him to be sick after each meal.

They take lumpswhen they areready andit can be a slow process. I would be suspicious of jar lumps though - homemade lumps can be miniscule at first, working up gradually...

would it be bad to continue with the purees a little longer? (just have visions of my h/v saying ooh now really he should be eating mashed foods by now)

Do what you think isbest. He'll do it when he's ready. Maybe try again in aweek or 2 - quite a long time in a baby's development and a lot may change.

  • thanks by then will be getting on to 8 months to prob will be a bit better. (so far i've been doing a lumpy one and a yoghurt or something of that nature) but after pureeing the dinner today and him still eating it - I know ti's not the food he dislikes iycwim

(i've tried several differnt dinners but all have the same results) think we'll hold back then for a short time and try again later on - as they say don't change if it works!

Each child is different. My DD was eating toast & sandwiches by 9 mths but then DS wasn't keen on lumps until then ! ( 9 mths ) But now he eats better than she does ! But then again he used to clap when I gave him brocoli

Your DS sounds like he isn't ready yet, but with home made food you can thicken the purees, then introduce a rougher texture and then finally small lumps. This is what I did with DS.

yes he manages toast, and bread sticks, some veggies in chunks he can hold it just seems to be the chewing part within the puree that's the prob iycwim. back to purees then.

could you not just give more finger foods if he is ok with them?

aitch71 · 26/09/2006 20:09

isn't what littlepiggie has suggested the obvious solution, munz?

Tutter · 26/09/2006 20:10

sympathies. ds realy struggled with lumps too. he managed ok with finger foods though - have you tried strips of very buttery soft toast?

i used to give ds wafers (like ice cream wafers, but flat squares) as somthing to get him used to textures.

just take it very slowly. good luck.

I was worried about this as my DS is coming up to 7 months and still won't accept anything but smooth purees. My DS has reflux and his consultant told me that he may take a little longer to accept lumps - he has a really sensitive gag reflex. The dietian said I should really be aiming to get him starting to accept them by 9 months - so I wouldn't worry just yet.

Perhaps try something a bit lumpier every couple of weeks. DS has just accepted baby porridge - he gagged on it only a couple of weeks ago.

USAUKMum · 27/09/2006 13:31

Munz, if he can manage finger food he is doing "lumps" imho. My DS wasn't even doing finger foods. As you say it is probably the mix in textures (lumps within a puree) that is the prob.

I would try not pureeing to a smooth texture. try mashing the veg instead, shredding chicken. Though beef is quite tough to chew, that I would still puree. That way he can move onto a thicker puree.
