Poo when weaning

Hi
I have just started introducing vegetables to my lo's diet, she has only had pureed sweet potato so far and only the last two days. She has had more frequent dirty nappys and the contents is definately mushier, is this normal or could she not suit it? I am unsure whether to try her on more tommorow or something else or even stop.

It's normal. As long as there are no problems otherwise then she's fine.

Twiglett · 25/09/2006 14:48

what goes in comes out

carrot poo is orange

spinach poo is green

always mushy and smelly

jillandbea · 25/09/2006 15:34

She is a little more sleepy today but then her Dad has been trying to train her to crawl!

noooooooo
tell dad to stop immediately

you DO NOT want your child to move at all for as long as possible

really it makes life so much less peaceful, more difficult

delay the crawling

gaffer tape her to the floor if necessary

Sorry to hijack this but no one seems interested in my own poo thread, siggghhh.

When you say more frequently, is one nappy per hour ok or is this too much, should we stop giving him fruit & veg ? He has been having it for about 3 weeks and whilst the contents changed its only now that we are having this extreme frequency. I thought it was banana but he hasn't had any for the last 2 days.

Rookiemum · 25/09/2006 20:12

Oh and totally agree with the no crawling. Our DS is creating quite enough havoc by stealthily rotating to DVD player and other unfriendly items without even being able to crawl.

jillandbea · 25/09/2006 20:54

More frequently for us is 3 times in 24 hours we are usually lucky to get one poo every 24-48 hours even with extra water to drink. I really wouldn't know about a dirty nappy every hour, the only time we had that was with a tummy bug and that took about a week to clear up so perhaps it could be that?

So is it normal for it to come out looking exactly the same as when it went in? or does that mean it's not being digested? bitten off pieces of carrot and pureed sweet potato.

Rookiemum · 29/09/2006 09:25

I think thats normal, I was reading What to expect the first year and they said something about their digestive systems not being fully operational until over a year and therefore this will happen. Also some things are hard to digest, like when an adult eats corn.

thepoppy · 29/09/2006 09:40

that's a relief. I didn't notice the nectarine, but I suppose that that's much less fiberous and mostly juice by the time he'd finished munching it.

lazybones · 29/09/2006 16:47

One of my friends says just wait for raisins! They come out the same in little greedy fast eaters' nappies, but puffed up..

My dd's poos are same in same out, just getting used to digesting it I guess. A bit of a shock after all that lovely breastmilk.

She got constipated after first week - quite traumatic (for me anyway). Any advice to help prevent/ treat further occurances?

Rookiemum · 29/09/2006 21:22

Someone I know reckoned prune juice helps with constipation, also make sure they drink more water when eating.

mez656 · 30/09/2006 05:23

Rookiemum - Once an hour seems like a lot to me. I know that the frequency definitely varies but do you really mean once and hour? Even at night? Is it runny/watery/mucousy? IS he breastfed? I don't really know what is normal as I'm on my first but it sounds a bit much... That said, when my dd first started solids, she was pooing more often but it's leveled out a bit now that she's been on them for a couple months.

Rookiemum · 30/09/2006 13:05

Oh thankfully rookiebaby has sorted himself out on Wednesday he was back to normal.

I think it must have been something to do with me just washing his spoons and things rather than sterilising them and his little tummy getting used to germs, thats my theory anyway.

We had banana on Thursday and it seemed not to cause the explosions, good job as it could be my fave weaning food as so easy.

Thanks for your post anyway.

terramum · 30/09/2006 13:36

thepoppy - yes its normal for it to come out looking the same as it goes it. A lot of digestion happens before the food even hits the stomach by being chewed. As babies dont get their molars until later on this doesnt happen until then and it can take even longer for them to get the hang of using them efficiently.
