cheerios

hell there,
recently my friend said that her 1 year old son was enjoying his cheerios in the morning, and another chum gives them to her daughter every morning. so i stuck some on the shopping list and gave them to dd to play with. perfect BLW food, innit? she loved them, and bless her heart took ages to pootle them around her highchair tray so i got loads of time to do mundane domestic chores. huzzah!

and then i tasted them! my god, they are SO sweet. Don't have the pack any more as that's gone out already.

So am i being too precious? or is it possible to get a good little cereal (the puffed-ness was good from a BLW perspective) which isn't so full of sugar? any help gratefully accepted.

Hello there. not Hell. sorry, how rude.

LOADS of sugar. I wouldn't if i were you. Others may disagree but if you care about what goes into their mouths to the extent where you're posting this then I think you're better off wothout. There are loads of other things you can give instead.

Moomin · 23/09/2006 20:53

btw you can buy unsweetened puffed wheat if that sort of thing is what you're after

archiesmummy · 23/09/2006 21:54

aitch, funny you posted this today as I bought DS Quakers Oat Hoops (a bit smaller but very similar) yesterday and was actually questioning if I should let him have them or not.
Anyway, he loves them and I'm not gonna let him have them every day, but now and again I personally don't think is a problem.

aitch71 · 23/09/2006 21:57

what, like a rice krispies sort of a thing?

PinkTulips · 23/09/2006 21:58

not every morning but now and again they're no harm,, and the fact that they're whole grain makes you feel a little better about the suger....... at least you not giving coco-pops!

DanielMummy · 23/09/2006 22:51

I've bought a packet of Peter Rabbit cornflakes (only ingredient is corn) and a packet of Kallo puffed rice cereal (only incredient is brown rice) for DS, but I haven't actually opened either pack yet. Both organic and no added ingredients.

archiesmummy · 23/09/2006 22:56

Just checked the oat hoops and they contain 16.6g sugar per 100g. That really is a load more than I thought!!!!

hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:02

\link{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisodium_phosphate\I've only found the US version of the ingredients - do the UK ones contain trisodium phosphate?)

Gingerbear · 23/09/2006 23:03

Not much use, but Cheerios in the US don't have so much sugar in them.

aitch71 · 23/09/2006 23:06

it's just that i'm looking for something i can put in her little snack box and take out with us. at the moment we take rice cakes and sultanas and if we're out in a restaurant the (flattened) sultanas keep her occupied so i was hoping for something similar but less sugary.

Gingerbear · 23/09/2006 23:10

how old is she?
Try mini breadsticks, dried apple rings.
Look out for 'Nature's Path' cereals (in the organic section of supermkt) They do puffed rice that is sugar free.

I fed DD cheerios too, moderation OK.

PinkTulips · 23/09/2006 23:11

organics alphabet biscuit com in abow of 6 little bags, suger free and yummy. i take them or little boxes of raisens everywhere for dd

aitch71 · 23/09/2006 23:11

blimey archiesmum - that is, as we say round here, a shitload of sugar!
hunker i've already flattened the box and i can't get to it now so i don't know. they are very, very sweet, though.
i do give dd peas in the house for a similar time-wasting, fine motor skilltastic effect. so i'm looking for something small, non-sugary, squashable/dissolvable and non-perishable, any ideas?

How about some tasty oatcakes?

PinkTulips · 23/09/2006 23:11

wow, that was bad typing!

hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:11

Oh, my link worked really well there

Here...

hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:12

Organix Moon Biscuits, Organix carrot sticks, Organix sweetcorn rings (I should have blinking shares in Organix...!)

PinkTulips · 23/09/2006 23:13

lovely, no more cheerios for dd then

just as well she loves fruit and fibre for her breakfast!

PinkTulips · 23/09/2006 23:14

lol hunker, they're fab though aren't they.

very annoyed at my local supermarket though as they don't do the organix cereal bars anymore and she loved them

aitch71 · 23/09/2006 23:18

cool, thanks everyone. i'll have a look in the organic section... trouble is i don't like big supermarkets but locally there isn't anywhere with a big organic bit.

OP posts:
archiesmummy · 23/09/2006 23:19

same here PinkTulips, no organix stuff, have to walk miles (will buy car when I get part time job after mat leave over, but does wonders for post preg belly I suppose) to get moon biscuits as DS loves them

aitch71 · 23/09/2006 23:20

oh jesus... just read hunker's link.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:49

Sorry, Aitch...

aitch71 · 24/09/2006 00:42
