Just feed them cold puree or does it HAVE to be warm?

Have 4yr old dd and am out and about alot so would be easier just to be able to take tub of homemade puree but wont always have facility to warm it.

What do you think?

i think when my dd was that age (well, i don;t think i braved taking the food out til a couple of months on cos i'm a wimp but....ykwim) i would take it out the freezer in cube form, and leave it to defrost over the day in her bowl with lid, and by the time it was time to eat it it was not too cold.

now someone is going to tell me i gave bacteria a chance to breed or something and i'll feel awful, but will know for when we get round to having another one

Mum2FunkyDude · 23/09/2006 15:27

Yes, BitShy...I would say rather microwave straight from frozen until right temp. Does not leave room for bad bugs. However, if it is freshly made and you give it in a couple of hours its fine, although it is always better to cool it down as quick as possible, it is at room temp. that they florish.

If you go out, why not take store bought jars instead, that way you'll know it's save.

As for heating it up, if baby is used to eating it room temp. it will be fine, all I know is that they sometimes can get tummy ache from cold food, (from fridge) and as your dd, I'm sure you meant is 4 months old, I would tend to rather look at the safety of the food than the temp. IYKWIM

Unnecessary paranoia over germs
Stuff left to thaw over the day is fine.
What do you think people did before fridges FGS.

Someone posted a while back about throwing a stew that they had left out overnight away.

Barking.

mustrunmore · 23/09/2006 15:39

I did/do jars for out and about, real food for at home. And both ds's only ever ate ambient jar food; too much hassle to warm it up!

alittlebitshy · 23/09/2006 15:40

thanks moonie.
i only did it (leave it to thaw through the morning)when going out, but in my opinion i was NOT going to buy her a jar, she ate MY food, and it seemed the best way to do it.

alittlebitshy · 23/09/2006 15:40

your post hadn't come in when i wrote mine mustrummore. not a dig.

Took dd ages to work out tey needed money.I used to just let her get in andthen jiggle it myself a bit.

Mandymoo · 23/09/2006 16:38

I used to heat up in microwave, then put in one of those bags that keeps bottles warm. Would be grand when you go to use it an hour or 2 later.

Isn't it worse for bacticia build up to keep thngs warm for a long time raather than cool? Seem to remember doing things with culture in petri dishes at school and I'm sure the warm ones grew quicker than the cool or hot ones.
Mind you, my DS gets milk or finger food only when we are not at home at the mo , much simpler than fannying about with spoon and pots.

sweetkitty · 23/09/2006 22:03

Keeping food at less than 5 degreesC slows down the growth of most bacteria keeping food at room temperature will speed up growth dramatically.

However, taking some homemade food out and letting it warm up for under 4 hours will not cause any great concern, I would and have done it.

MrsSpoon · 23/09/2006 22:08

When my DS1 was little (he's 7 1/2 now so it was while ago) and I was out and about a cafe refused to heat my homemade baby food, said it had to be jarred food that was still sealed before they would touch it. I always took jars when out after that.

Here is a thread from a while back.
here
and moondog , I would throw it away too

hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:15

Hey, MandyMoo, who never appears on lists...you know you don't have to give them food that young, don't you? And it's a whole load easier if you wait a bit, food-wise.

[shuts up...for now]

Mandymoo · 24/09/2006 10:27

Hey Hunk (who never puts me on lists....) if you want to come round to my house with my ds who is perm hungry and deal with him all through the night for another couple of months then i'll come back at 6 months and start weaning then!!!!!!!

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 24/09/2006 16:25

mandymoo - I'm sure you don't want to hear this but my DD2 was constantly hungry attached to my boobs, waking in the night for feeds etc, we started solids at 6 months, she has 3 good meals a day plus snacks loads of finger foods etc and the same amount of milk and it has not made one bit of difference to her sleeping!
