breakfast for BLW- dairy, soy, peanut, egg free

WhatsMyAgeAgain · 24/07/2014 09:33

Please help. 9 months old. Won't have porridge off a spoon. Has reactions to milk, peanut butter, egg and I suspect soy.

He seems to want flavour and texture. So marmite on slices of toasted bagel is about as far as I've got.

Please help! (I need my boobs back and he needs some solid food in him)

Porridge oat fingers with fruit purée spread (fingers made with water or coconut milk)

fanjobiscuits · 24/07/2014 09:36

Coconut milk rice pudding

Different fruit cut up to suit

WhatsMyAgeAgain · 24/07/2014 09:37

What are porridge oat fingers?

TravellingToad · 24/07/2014 09:37

Marmite is extremely salty and not really appropriate for a baby

Sorry to kill the one food you had! Realise that's hugely unhelpful.

TheTrashheapHasSpoken · 24/07/2014 09:41

Oat milk is a lovely non-dairy substitute.

Perhaps try:
diced bits of soft fruit;
banana & oat (or coconut) milk smoothies with some porridge oats mixed in to thicken up - let DC suck it through a straw or purchase some reusable pouches (a godsend!);
thinly sliced toast smeared with banana (& honey and/or almond or hazelnut butter);
a whole pear, peeled, to gnaw on is also tasty and appropriately soft enough

TheTrashheapHasSpoken · 24/07/2014 09:43

Yes, I agree with Toad - marmite is not really a good thing to give a baby - far too high in sodium

TheTrashheapHasSpoken · 24/07/2014 09:46

One more suggestion that has always worked for us - shredded wheat minis softened with oat milk - place them on the table or highchair trey and just let DC get on with it. Can be a bit messy (we usually strip DC down to his nappy for every meal - even when eating out), but they enjoy playing with the texture and feeding themselves.

WhatsMyAgeAgain · 24/07/2014 09:59

Useful tips thanks. Will try softened cereal with oat or coconut milk.

I know marmite is salty but I figured the amount he actually ingests is miniscule.mostly ends up on the floor sigh. But at least he sucks the bread a bid before discarding it.

Forgot about honey- but i'm sure I read that it is unsuitable for babies?

Under 12 months you should avoid honey due to the (v small) risk of infant botulism.

-Avocado pieces / sliced
-1/2 banana
-Cooked mushrooms, spinach and piece salmon ( can cook 1 fillet in oven in foil and will last few days in fridge to give 1/3 each morning)
-Baked beans ( might want to make own basically a basic homemade tomato sauce and haricot beans and some herbs) - can freeze so only make once and portion into freezer tubs

Try just making porridge really thick with oat/ coconut milk so spoon almost stands and let him get on with it himself with spoon alone

If your Lo is having reactions, have you seen a Paed and a dietician AgeAgain?

Andcake · 30/07/2014 10:48

Oat milk and almond milk are lovely - porridge fingers can be made with water though and my ds loves. I actually add a touch of cinnamon to add flavour.

Sunwheel fruit spread is great on toast, bagels etc with no butter - looks a bit funny (dark brown) but lasts forever - you can get it in holland and barratt (its very very yummy too).

But speak to HV about allergies.

rootypig · 30/07/2014 10:53

Almond or cashew butter on toast
Avocado on toast
Porridge or bircher muesli made with coconut milk, thick enough for him to pick up

Other than that, maybe you need to let go of the idea of breakfast food and just start giving him things like mixed roasted veggies.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 30/07/2014 11:16

You are right OP, no hone until one. The info is here.

Recipe for DF porridge fingers here.

How about a toasted cinnamon and raisin bagel spread with pure? I'm DF and I quite like apricot shreddies with almond milk in the morning.

There are some great DF and ef breakfast recipes here.

Honey not hone, sorry Blush

WhatsMyAgeAgain · 31/07/2014 15:00

Wow. Thank you, I will enjoy trying out some ideas.

How are you getting on age? Have you tried anything new yet? Smile

WhatsMyAgeAgain · 02/08/2014 09:22

It's going pretty badly. He's eating very little. Filling up on breast milk at night.

He isn't interested in finger foods- only tried bagels and soft fruit so far. Manahing to get some fruit puree down him.

During the day he'll gnaw a breadstick and suck some hummus off a pitta. Might have a few spoonfuls of dinner and throw his roasted veg on the floor.

Need to reduce the night feeds so he's hungrier in the day. Really hope the doctor can help with some formula he can drink.

9 months is a classic sleep regression so the night feeds might be nothing to do with his diet, so don't fret too much. Have a read of this on reducing night feeds and askmoxie on the 9 month sleep regressionSmile
