Jelly?

Was eating jelly last night and dd (6 months) was very interested, so gave her a taste. Then I wondered whether the sugar free jelly (which I was eating) should be avoided in babies and she should have full sugar? Or is that too much sugar?

Or actually, jelly is empty calories anyway so she shouldn't have it? But then I read about them trying (pretty much) everything I eat..

This weaning lark is hard!

Jelly is a good texture for them to play with, so stick it on a plate and let them sink their hands into it. Would not give it as a food, more for playing.

Suger free jelly usually has aspartame in, personally I would and do avoid it at all costs? It is not recommended for children under 3.
I'm sure the little bit she had would not matter in the grand scheme of things.

I very occasionally give bought jelly to my 2 year old, with fruit in preferably, as a pudding just for a change. I wouldn't give it to a 6 month old, same with the sugar free ones.

What I did do for my 6 month old was make jelly at home from fruit juice with no added sugar. I used a vegetarian gelling agent which worked well. I still didn't give it that often as even pure fruit juice is too much sugar for frequent use.
