I can't believe I never knew this board existed!

My dd is only 17 weeks so no where near weaning yet but I am starting to think (panic) about it because I seemed to get it so wrong with my ds who is now 5.5. He is so fussy and there are a million things he won't eat so I really want to avoid that this time. I'm also torn between purees and blw, I did purees last time but love the idea of blw (although the whole choking thing terrifies me)!

Just wondering if there are any good books I could buy to help me through it?!

The River Cottage Baby & Toddler cook book is great. Lots of good recipes and a good intro about weaning generally. Covers spoonfeeding and BLW.

If you're interested in doing BLW then you could read the Gill Rapley book on it. No recipes but it explains the process and the rationale behind it. She has also done a separate cookbook as well I think.

With the BLW, your baby may do lots of gagging. This isn't choking at all, which is fortunately rare and quite different. People sometimes confuse gagging with choking and get scared. Gagging is actually a protective mechanism which brings food forwards to try again. Even if you do the traditional spoonfeeding of purees you would introduce finger foods as soon as possible anyway, so IMO there is no extra risk of choking with BLW.

Hi just wanted to say that I did blw, more or less, with DS1 and he was fussy from day 1. He eats healthily but is still fussy. DS2 has been a joy to wean - finger foods and purees, then lumpy food spoonfed as well - he chomps it all down. So just because the first child isn't a great eater, that doesn't mean the second won't be. I found the NHS weaning page helpful as a starting point. The Gill Rapley book is good on eg safety but very evangelical.

If you check out your local library, they will probably have a selection of weaning books. You can dip in and out of different books and its a lot cheaper. Didn't do blw, but the blw cookbook has some great recipes and finger food ideas.

Thanks everyone think I will pop to the library at the weekend and have a look at some books. Not sure I'm brave enough to do full on BLW so will maybe go with purees and finger foods.

You may see a bit more of me on here in the coming months!

BLW Cookbook is much better than the actual BLW book.
