going from full fat to semi skimmed milk

not really a weaning question exactly...

DS is 2 next month and has been drinking full fat milk since he turned 1. Someone told me that from the age of 2 you can swop to semi-skimmed milk, as they no longer need as many calories from milk, although of course still need the calcium. Obviously, this depends on there being no concerns about their weight gain/general calorie intake over all through food etc.

Anyone else heard/know/done this? Would be quite nice to get rid of the full fat milk in the house, as I've developped a taste for it too on my cereal and in my milky coffe in the mornings, and I certainly don't need the extra calories...!!

I swapped sometime between 2 and 3 with DD1 as it was pain trying to remember to buy both full-fat and semi skimmed. I have no doubt with DD2 she will drink a lot more of semi skimmed as that is what we normally have in the house.

personally I'd say that a healthy 2 yr old will be fine on semi skimmed so long as the rest of their diet isn't particularly low fat. I'm sure my DD1 more than compensates in summer with ice cream and in the winter with custard!!!

we did swap but mainly because I drink semi-skimmed and it saved having 2 milks in the fridge. They have full fat yoghurt and cheese.

I actually swapped to skimmed for dd at around 2 as she drank gallons of the stuff and I felt it was filling her up too much. It did help her appetite for other foods and she ate lots of other full fat dairy anyway.

I dont think skimmed is advised until the age of 5 as it is too low in fat, calories and fat soluble vitamins (you skim the fat and the vitamins get removed too)

Yes, I think that is the official advice. But when you read into it further and look at what other countries do, it just gets confusing and advice is a little bit contradictory.

Semi-skimmed is fine from age 2 anyway and if your child is getting a balanced diet and eating well they'll be getting all their vitamins.
