my ds has just turned 1 and my health visitor advised me not to give him a big drink of milk before bed anymore, he usually had breakfast, lunch, and dinner then a 9oz bottle before he went to bed.. he has his dinner at 4 and goes to bed at half 7 and that seems a long time for no food.. so ive startef giving him a bowl or porridge or weetabix with a little drink of milk about half 6, does anyone else do this? I dont want to be feeding him too much

I'd keep going with the milk. My 2.4yo still has milk before bed.

We give our 19 month old ready brek before bed - every night - and then 4oz of cows milk to drink too. We've done this since he was a year old when we switched from formula to cows milk as he started waking in the night hungry. It works for us, all you can do is try it and see how you go.

Mine have a bowl of natural yogurt and a glass of milk at bed time. But as long as your DS is healthy and happy I can't see a problem with 9 oz milk at bedtime. Is the HV concerned that he isn't eating enough solids? My DS is very healthy and drinks nearly 2 pints of milk every day, though he is 11 now, and is eating me out of house and home.

I would go for the cereal and a bit of milk. Ds1 got hooked on his bedtime bottle and used it a a meal replacement- this time round I will do cereal and milk. You can't over feed a child, they will only eat what they want and 4pm as last meal is a long time until breakfast, so bulk the tummy and let sleeping babies sleeeeeeep!

the HV keeps saying 'milk isnt nessicary now' dont know what she means but thats the reason for her saying it, thankyou ill keep going with the porridge and bit of milk :)

The NHS says milk is necessary until at least 2, and they should be having 12oz a day between 12-24 months.

The reason for saying 300ml/12oz of whole cow's milk up till 2 is for the calcium. 300ml of whole cow's milk contains 350mg of calcium which is the daily requirement for children of this age. You don't actually have to give milk if you are happy that your child is getting that much calcium from other dietary sources.

My feeling about milk is that if it isn't interfering with their solid food intake, they like it, and it settles them before bed and helps them sleep because they're not hungry - don't mess with something that works!

But then we've given up several times with moving on from bottles because she won't have it Blush
