I was a bit Shock to see the website for a mainstream parenting magazine telling parents to ignore all the NHS advice on when to wean your baby. linky

Does it say ignore it? Confused I only skim read it but I couldn't see anything too bad in there.

Very confusing?!?

ExBrightonBell · 29/05/2014 17:20

I think the OP means the first paragraph (under the heading of "Start") where it says that the govt advises 6 months to start weaning, following the WHO guidelines. It then says that the WHO advice only applies to developing countries (not accurate) and that your baby might be ready for solids from 4 months.

Angelto5 · 29/05/2014 17:40

My dd3 is just 4 months & my hv still says not 2 wean her till 6 months. They change they're mind all the time & u never know who's right!!!

ExBrightonBell · 29/05/2014 17:45

Angelto5, the govt guidelines have been 6 months since at least 2003, so that's over 10 years now. It's not like the advice has changed every year.

Angelto5 · 29/05/2014 17:46

It does when ur first child was born 1998.

Igggi · 29/05/2014 17:51

That is shocking - the usual WHO stuff that's trotted out re bf too - wonder if worth complaining. No coincidence that baby food companies advertise in their mag is it - think if the extra revenue of two months more purchases per baby .

ExBrightonBell · 29/05/2014 18:03

Angelto5, it's not unreasonable for guidelines to change once in 16 years with improvements in our understanding of science. It's hardly 'changing their minds all the time'. Smile

Yes, sorry, it was this paragraph that directly contradicts official advice:
"The government recommends weaning at six months, following guidance from the World Health Organisation. But this advice is aimed at developing countries, where there can be risks posed by poor hygiene. We don’t have those problems so, by around four months (but not before 17 weeks), your baby could be ready for more than just milk."
She also says that if they poke food straight back out with their tongue to carry on feeding them, which I was told was a sign they weren't ready.
6 months is advised elsewhere on the website, so it seems a tad confusing if nothing else. But a good point about the baby food Igggi - though boots have weaning advice provided by Cow and Gate and even they stick to government guidelines!
