blw; high chair or booster seat?

I'm thinking about this well in advance but I plan to do blw with my dd and I was wondering what you all think the best seating is.
Dd is only 16 weeks so still got at least 10 weeks to go but if there's any partcular reccommendations then I thought I should check them out. Dd will be fed both at home and at my parents house as my mum will care for her for at least 3 days per week when I work.

I used a high chair at first, then changed to a booster seet at about 11 months as DD much preferred to be sat at the actual table witht he rest of the family

hairymclary · 30/08/2006 22:00

I wished I had got a tripp trapp highchair. DS is much, much better sat up at the table with us only a booster seat won't fit properly grrr

i used both but found that a booster seat gets them more involved and shows them how 'big people' should sit!
my friend didn't have space for a highchair and only used a booster, said he really improved her ds posture

no, same here. and those splashmats are pointless. any baby can throw further than that! lol
I wait til it dries and then hoover

wartywarthog · 30/08/2006 23:01

you can get tray attachments for the the tripp trapp though.

our seats are fabric so i can't do the booster thing, but i do rate that antilop chair from ikea which can be used with or without the tray and goes right up to the table. (also it's heavenly easy to clean and only costs £12.)
for that price you can buy both and see what the baby prefers...

LaDiDaDi · 31/08/2006 10:49

I shall have a look in the catalogue, was just at ikea on Tuesday . Why can't you use a booster seat if your chairs are fabric?

i found the trays on ebay, so not sure where you'd find them in the shops. here are a couple:

tray

another one with a rim

the mess, oh dear god the mess...

We got a Svan, which is great because DS can sit up at the table at the exact right height, and it'll grow with him. We didn't bother with a plate for ages, for the reasons explained by Ooops. He's 14 months now and will happily eat his meal from a plate with his fingers, while waving his fork in the air. It eventually goes overboard, but usually only once it's empty.

One thing that I think is way more important than a high chair is a bit of lino to put under it. We've been using sheets of plastic or oilcloth, but bought some lino today and it is miles easier to clean. (Of course, if your floor is already lino then you're home and dry and don't bother buying anything extra.)

DanielMummy · 31/08/2006 14:43

We've got the Mamas and Papas Prima Pappa highchair, but with hindsight I don't recommend it. It takes ages to clean after each meal as it has so many nooks and crannies that the food bits get into. And also although it folds up, you can't really take it away with you, as its so bulky. On the other hand, its best feature is if my baby falls asleep in it, I can tilt it back, so he can sleep there undisturbed.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 31/08/2006 14:45

I bought a high chair and hated it! It bugged me so much, cleaning all the nooks and crannys and as I live in a terrace (correction rabbit hutch)it just felt like it was always in the way.
I gave up with it and fed ds in his bouncy chair!
I got a booster seat from around 9 months and he still uses it now at 19m.
I personally would never buy a high chair!

LaDiDaDi · 01/09/2006 10:50

Thanks for your responses. I think I'm going to get the First Years Three Stage Reclining Booster Seat, it scores well on the mumsnet reviews, looks confy but easy to clean. Quite reasonably priced too.

We've got a tripp trapp which ds loves. I found the same problem as oops with tipping the plate thing, but have just discovered tommee tippee 'magic mats' which work with plates (not so good with bowls) and even though ds can unstick the plate it takes longer and I have some warning before the food goes everywhere

LaDiDaDi · 03/09/2006 13:29

The tripp trapp looks lovely but is expensive and I think I'm going to need two of whatever I buy, one for mum's house and one for home, so the booster option is more affordable.

The advantage with the tripp trapp is that it grows with the child and in fact an be their chair well into their teens if wanted as the footrest turns into the seat bit. Also it's a beautiful bit of furniture

aitch71 · 03/09/2006 22:51

can i ask why people need chairs to recline? do other people's babies fall asleep while eating?

DanielMummy · 03/09/2006 23:12

Yes, my little one falls asleep about twice a week during his meal, usually because he's not had a nap earlier.

wartywarthog · 04/09/2006 12:39

ladidadi, there are a few tripp trapps going on ebay - you might be able to get one for a good price.

LaDiDaDi · 06/09/2006 10:39

I will get dp to have a look, he does all of our ebay stuff.
