What to wean a reflux baby with?

Hi All, I need to some advice, I have a 5 mth old boy who has terrible reflux & has had from day 5. I've kept on top of it by cutting all trigger foods from my diet (dairy, soy, citrus, tomatoes, chocolate, alcohol, onions, brassicas, spices etc) which has helped-he still vomits but without the pain however 2 weeks ago I decided to start introducing solids and it has rather backfired on me, after 4 days of baby porridge & banana- he is back to screaming & arching his back and being generally miserable! I stopped for a week & then tried with mashed potato & carrot, 11pm same night he was writhing with pain & we're back to square one. He is EBF. I tried gaviscon initially but found it virtually impossible to get him to take 30ml of liquid that wasn't milk! He is my 3rd & I did solely BLW for the first 2 and had no problems with them. I took him to the dr today to get a referral to see paediatrician but will be 2 months on nhs! I need food ideas that won't aggravate his reflux more. Pls help!!!!

I think the main purpise of infant gaviscon is to thicken the milk, so not sure giving it separately will help? Maybe ask that question on here for others who ebf a reflux baby.

Have you been given any other reflux meds in the meantime? My DS' reflux improved with ranitidine, but there are a few options out there.

Also just a handy hint, I always found banana to really irritate DS' reflux.

No advice on the weaning front, as DD is only 7 weeks but I can tell you how I give gaviscon at least! I express in the morning then mix about 1/2 oz of expressed milk with a sachet of gaviscon and give it to her from a bottle each time I breastfeed her. It's a complete faff, but it works so overall I get more sleep than I did with a 24/7 screaming baby.

Good luck with the weaning. I may be in your shoes in a few months time!

Hi, thanks for the tip re bananas, I jumped right in with that as worked for the other 2. I've stopped with the food at the moment until I get his reflux back under control which needs to be soon as I'm only getting 4 hrs broken sleep now due to him waking at 11pm screaming which continues on. & off for 2-3hrs!! I've tried gaviscon, gripe water but only thing seems to work is jiggling & a dummy.

I would ask your GP/HV for some meds like ranitadine or omeprazol to help with the pain.
My GP increased the dose of omeprazol for my LO when weaning and I'm sure it helped. Things like tomato, pineapple etc make the pain worse, but if I give her omeprazol she manages it fine.

My dd had reflux and was on omeprazole. I tried weaning several times between 4 and 7 months, as I was advised to wean early cos of poor weight gain on milk alone. But it just didn't work and I gave up after a day or so each time and went back to milk only as the reflux got much worse and dd also got extremely constipated. I went to the doctors and had a referral to a consultant.

But, at 7 months when I tried again, suddenly everything was fine and she enjoyed weaning and the reflux actually got a bit better.

I've no idea why, the doctor suggested that her digestive tract was immature. I've read several times on mumsnet that some babies have trouble digesting bananas. When I was weaning I kept off fruit or anything acidic, I don't know whether this helped or not but I thought it might make the reflux worse.

Hope this helps, reflux is hard work for you and your LO, but it really does get better over time.
