My dd is 8months old she eats 3 times a day, and has 3 8oz bottles (formula) the health visitor has just been and weighed her, she is 21 lb 7 and in the 95th percentile, she want me to go to baby clinic in 6 weeks to weigh her and check her again, she said if she keeps going up in the percentile then there is something wrong and dd will have to see a pediatrician!!! I'm so scared, she isn't over fed although she never crys for food.. Should I only feed her when she crys for it? Or should I carry on with our normal routine? I have heard the horror story's of babies going to the doctors because of something being wrong and then social services take them away.. Any advice???

Well it depends on her height! My DS is 23 months now and is 98 percentile for weight. But also for height. He is perfectly in proportion.

2nd percentile for weight would be fine too, as long as the height matched.

TravellingToad · 15/05/2014 13:34

So is she keeping going up in percentiles then? What did she used to be?

Rainydays123 · 15/05/2014 13:38

She was 9th when she was born, then gone up to 25th 50th 75th 91 and now 95!! She is 25th percentile in heights but head is the same as weight..

Clearly social services are not going to take your dd away for being over 95th centile weight v 25 for height. (I am fairly certain you were joking about this?)

Presumably they will want to investigate to see if there is a medical reason why this is happening. Then if there is they can treat it. As part of that they may well want to check how much food she has, portion sizes etc. They wouldn't be doing their job properly if they didn't check this.

How mobile is she at the moment - is she crawling, bum shuffling, cruising? Sometimes there is a slow down in weight gain when they get moving.

Rainydays123 · 15/05/2014 14:30

No I wasn't joking but when you put it like that, I do sound rather silly, no she isn't mobile yet.

I bet when she gets moving she'll start to balance out, but a check in 6 weeks sounds prudent just in case.

Thankyou!

It may be ok but probably worth keeping a.close eye on it. You don't mention portion size - are her meals scaled down? The only reason I say this is I found my Mil giving my DD huge portions when she was with her - barely less than what I would eat as an adult. She said it was because she just kept going and going - well my DD is like me - if she sees food she wants to eat it - has no off switch. It's up to me as the adult to give her the right amount. I aim for 1/4 to 1/3 of an adult portion (also I think my concept of an adult portion is significantly less than my Mil!)
If her meals are small then ignore me - but probably worth keeping in touch with a gp (not hv)

My dd is 7months 22lbs and on the 99.6 centile for height and 91st for height. She eats breakfast lunch and sometimes dinner and has 2 5oz formula bottles in the day and a 7oz before bed.

Maybe you could cut the bottles down to less ounces in the day?

Does she have any snacks during the day?

Do you offer her water after food instead of bottles?

ItsBritneyBitch · 15/05/2014 14:54

99.6 for weight that should say

mrsbug · 15/05/2014 14:55

Well this sounds like dds proportions and no one suggested it was a problem. I breastfed her and did baby led weaning and she just loved her food.

Rainydays123 · 15/05/2014 15:28

The portion sizes are normal and she will stop eating when full, I think I may cut A couple ounces in her bottles, she doesn't snack in between meals because she is always full and I give her water with meals. I was putting formula milk with porridge in the mornings so hv suggested I switched to cows milk which I am going to do, she is a very happy baby, I'm just now terrified that something is wrong.. At 6 months hv said drop a bottle and it didn't bother her in the slightest.

I've just put a post on another thread about the health visitor obsession with these ridiculous centile lines! I had a really big baby (for my size) and he was really hungry and I was basically accused of overfeeding him because he went up and crossed over the centile lines. What was I supposed to do - deny him bottles when he was crying with hunger? He's now almost 3 and perfectly in proportion. Once they get mobile they slim down. Trust your own instinct, try not to worry, but worth keeping an eye on just in case. 21lb is not that big, my DS2 is 6 months old and weights 17lb.x
