'Loaded spoon' ideas

Gerty1002 · 14/05/2014 09:16

My 8mo DS feeds himself with a loaded spoon and finger food quite effectively, so I do a mixture of both - spoon tends to be breakfast like weetabix or porridge, or greek yoghurt after a meal.

However, my DGM childminds for me while I'm at work, and is very nervous of feeding finger food. So I'm looking for recommendations for family meals that can be blended/mashed easily and freeze well as I've depleted my stores of bolognase and chicken casserole and need a little inspiration. Preferably something not too runny so it sticks to the spoon, as he will only take it if he can do it himself.

Luckily the way my shifts have worked means it is usually only one lunch a week she has to feed him.

Shepherds pie
Mild dal

Sorry head is a bit blank!

Would she prepare stuff like scrambled egg/mashed baked beans and mashed potato/flaked tuna mixed with mayo?

Butternut squash risotto is a big hit in my house - recipe suitable for everyone and can be frozen in large and small portions.

I also keep a stock of frozen mashed potato mixed with steamed veg, butter and cheese (blended according to your DC's preference/age) - this can then be served with baked beans etc.

Fish pie

We've been having this trouble! Mashed potato is always good, especially if done with carrots - everything sticks to it, so you can have pieces of meat, peas etc and it stays on the spoon.

Also

Fish pie
Cottage pie
Macaroni cheese
Baked beans!
Cauliflower/broccoli cheese

If he can use a spoon, could he use a little baby fork? That can be loaded and handed over in much the same way, but means you can offer lumpier stuff like pasta shapes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Fish pie I will have to try but DP hates creamy sauces - and he despises risotto. Made a lovely butternut squash one as a pp suggested and most of it went in the bin (didn't have freezer space).

Re the fork idea, pasta shapes would be far too adventurous for DGM, she would still panic about choking, probably the same with scrambled egg.

If it is only once a week could you make it mince day? Maybe batch cook a savoury mince (like the base of a cottage pie) and a mild chilli and freeze in little pots. Also freeze twice the number of little pots of mash and she just has to reheat and mixed then together. The fewer variety of dishes you prepare the less often you will need to batch cook - an important factor once you return to work!

How about pasta made from the mini conchigli? You can buy it in sainsburys and morrisons. It's less scary than the big stuff.

I suspect you may be better off having her watch you have dinner with him to show her how well he copes.

Hmm maybe, or maybe just mash/cut it into smaller pieces.

I tried that, I gave him some pieces of chicken once and her face was filled with horror, despite him eating it perfectly well. As it's just one meal a week I'm not too bothered so don't want to push it.
