I know this has probably been done to death so apologies. If anyone is aware of a previous thread to link to please do.
DD is very slow at getting to grips with weaning. I know food before 1 is just for fun, but other babies her age seem to want to eat.
She's almost 7 months, so I am staying calm and just trying her once/twice a day on a variety of things- mini wheats, porridge with our without fruit puree, toast or bread fingers with cream cheese, peanut butter, mashed fruit for breakfast. Then purees, mashed potato, mince, slow cooked meat, steamed veg, avocado for lunch.
She basically eats nothing much! She will eat fruit puree and occasionally some yogurt (though I keep getting home and realising I bought low fat so eat it myself instead) and she likes hummus but not much else.
Even when she does eat it's only a veryfew spoonfuls.
I generally load the spoon then let her feed herself, or often I hold it and she face plants onto it with an open mouth.
Finger food she smushes and might suck but nothing goes down.

We started a week after she got teeth, at 5.5 months. She's big and healthy- over 24lbs, ebf. She is a happy baby, but she doesn't want to eat!

I am staying calm, honest, just wondering how long it took others to get the hang of it? At what age should Istart to worry if she's still not eating any real food? TIA

From what you say she is perfectly normal. She is eating, a few spoonfuls is good at 7 months. Perhaps your expectations of the amount she should be eating are a little too high?

bigbadbarry · 02/05/2014 17:05

None of mine were very interested before 9 months. I'd say "a few spoonfuls" was quite a lot at this age.

KikiShack · 02/05/2014 17:27

Thanks jilted and bigbad, maybe my expectations are a bit off- my closest friends from mum group have DCs slightly older than mine and they seem to have been eating loads for ages. It might just be my perception though, or maybe they're just different babies.
I love my food and DD loves her milk so I guess I just assumed she'd love solids too. I'll try and chill out and see what the next couple of months bring.
Thanks for the reassurance.

Personably think that until they are one you don't need to worry about how much they actually swallow. Its more about exploring tastes and textures and getting used to using cups and cutlery.

Have you read the MN weaning info? It's very good Smile

KikiShack · 02/05/2014 19:31

I have read it, but mainly before I started. Now that I'm in the thick of it I will reread, good idea. I think I just find it useful for people to tell me x sounds average as well as reading a document which covers everyone, so thanks for humouring me Grin

Sounds absolutely normal. Ds was slow to wean, then completely stopped eating when teething or poorly. It is really, really normal.

I was a worried wreck over ds and weaning and MN helped assure me it was normal. So I'm returning the advice!!

Good luck, she'll be eating you out of house and home in her own time!

EggyM · 08/05/2014 06:50

I was a wreck at 7 months as dd wouldn't eat anything! The occasional yoghurt or fruit puree. I finally gave up on purees altogether at 8 months (I still have am entire freezer full of them...) as she just refused every spoon, and started blw as she was starting to like finger food. She's still a bit fussy but has just started eating properly in the last few weeks. She's almost 10 months now. Don't stress your dd will get the hang of it eventually.

mycatlikestwiglets · 15/05/2014 12:41

I'm pleased to have read this thread as 6.5mo DD is also fairly uninterested in food most of the time. I'm trying to give her 3 meals a day but she's basically disinterested for 2 of them. She probably has a maximum of about 3 spoons of solids per day (we started out BLW but I've begun spoon feeding her the odd mouthful alongside it as she doesn't always bother even picking up finger food). She loves her milk though.

It's my 2nd DC but DS was very into solids from the start, eating huge portions, so I'm finding weaning a little stressful this time around!

HugoTheHippo · 19/05/2014 18:41

Sounds very similar to my DD - she had very little at 7mo - often would refuse to eat anything at a meal. I got her onto three meals a day by about 8m, but still now at 9m she frequently refuses breakfast and doesn't have huge quantities at lunchtime. She also still really struggles with lumpy or finger food. She is strong healthy and a steady 98th centile whopper, so I'm not worrying.

Sanch1 · 21/05/2014 11:14

My DD is 10 months and still not eating much, I'm sure she'll get it eventually, try not to worry and just keeping offering so she gets lots of practice.

hedgehogy · 21/05/2014 11:24

We started weaning at 6 months and it was two months before DD was interested, so she was 8 months old. She barely ate anything until then.

Another baby we know was eating loads at 6-7 months, however his parents started weaning him when he was 4 months old.

Thurlow · 21/05/2014 11:30

Sounds very normal to me, DD was getting on for 9mo before she finally grasped that food was nice and filled her up. Before that it was just something vaguely interesting but not particularly exciting.
