Anyone Weaning a Lactose Inotlerant/Cows' Milk Intolerant Baby?

Hi, my 5 month old ds has recently been diagnosed with lactose intolerance or cow's milk intolerance and after trying Nutramigen he is now on Neocate formula. We have been advised by a dietician to do dairy free weaning and were given some information. I was just wondering if anyone is about to embark on the same for some moral support?x

Not got experience of weaning a baby with CMPI but do have it myself, not much help I know.

Some things to try are wot no dairy yoghurts. 50/50 bread is dairy free too. If you are worried about calcium try sardines on toast. Broccolli and other green veg are also good. Tinned salmon with the bones is good too, perhaps you could make salmon fish cakes. Almonds are also high in calcium so try smooth almond butter on toast, slices of apple orscottish oatcakes.

Use pure or stork in the gold wrapper for baking. You can also use vitalite. Things like spag Bol, soups and chilli can be dairy free too.

If you want to eat out Pizza express cater for allergies and intolerances very well Smile

DD is lactose intolerant but it doesn't cause huge problems - we use Alpro soya milk for pancakes / porridge etc and free from margarine that we have anyway because I am cmpi.

The majority if her diet is fruit, veg and meat so it is fine. I think a gluten intolerance or egg allergy would be a lot more difficult to deal with!

Trilby is right about using soya milk for pancakes etc but bear in mind that roughly 50% of people who are CMPI also have problems will soya! well according to my dietician anyway Smile

Might be worth asking for some allergy testing and an appointment with a Paed Dietician.

Thanks for the tips everyone. We are awaiting a paediatric/dietician appointment so hopefully get some diagnosis/clarification soon. I had heard that about soya too, but I believe you can use rice milk etc. instead. Didn't realise bread contained dairy - guess I'll need to read all the labels just to make sure. I agree that avoiding gluten would be much harder. Was really looking forward to baby led weaning with him and hope this won't impact too much in terms of him reacting to things I didn't expect. No-one in our family has intolerances/allergies so I niaivly assumed we would never be in this situation! Guess it will just be more of a challenge!

I wouldn't try rice milk, according to the nhs it shouldn't be given to children under 5 years. I use almond milk in things like blueberry pancakes and you can make custard from it using birds custard powder which is also dairy free Smile

Think you'll still be ok with blw, just try to keep your diet DF and then it will be easier to make meals for everyone. There is no rush anyway, it's recommended to move to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months.

How about trying these banana pancakes for breakfast one day?

Hi OP. I am 1 month into weaning my DD2. My DS (now6) has cmp allergy and his paediatrician has recommended dairy free until 1 year for DD as she has higher risk of allergy too. I also weaned my DD1 dairy free and at 1 she had RAST tests and has no allergies so we moved on to cows milk then with no problems.
They've all been ebf until 6 months but I've used soya formula for cooking and porridge etc from then as they all seem fine with that. It's more tricky but initially it's all fruit and veg really anyway. I cooked cauliflower in formula tonight for the first time and it worked fine. Same for all finger foods stick with really simple foods, fruit, veg, meat, fish. Most bread does not have milk in but there are some surprising foods that do, crisps etc but you are unlikely to be giving them for a long while yet anyway. Some brands like organix and plum are great for dairy free finger foods and puréed fruit for puddings etc. I will get some soya yoghurt but if you're avoiding that too the birds custard tip is good and also milk jellies or rice pudding made with formula can work. Good luck.

Ds has cmpi, six months old. Neocate have a recipe book which advises on weaning, think you can order it through their website. If you're buying packet food, check that milk or milk powder etc isn't included on the list of ingredients. Its recommended that foods such as wheat, fish, egg, nuts, soya which may trigger an allergic reaction be introduced one at a time, and give it three days before trialling the next new food. Rice milk isn't recommended.
Best of luck, weaning is great fun! Ds loves his food which is great, had so much trouble with him refusing bottles before he was started on the neocate.

No advice but I'm just about to start dairy free weaning my daughter who has a suspected milk allergy. We've been advised to avoid soya too. She is ebf and we've been given nutramigen to try her on. I'm planning on baby rice and purees to start and doing some baby led stuff when she's a bit older. I don't see it as a big problem though paediatrician has advised us to avoid gluten and eggs for a year too which could be trickier. There's a facebook group called cmpa support for weaning you may find useful. Be good to hear how you get on.
