Gluten for the first time?

My friend is weaning her 19 week old, and she wants to know if, once a baby has had gluten for the first time and had no reaction, can you take that as a good sign she isn't going to have a reaction to gluten at all?

Staggered that she would give gluten at 19weeks tbh!

Does she know what to look for in terms of a reaction?

I'm guessing that it's a good sign, but don't know whether it might cause a tendency towards an intolerance in later life.

Well, she says that on the Farleys Rusk box, it says from 4 to 6 months so it must be ok, and farleys Rusk has gluten in it.

Is gluten very bad then? I did all my weaning years ago LOL

I think it's the 19 weeks people are more worried about - gluten isn't the ideal stuff at this stage, and personally I wouldn't take medical advice from a biscuit packet. Plain fruit or veg purées are more suitable and are lower in both sugar and salt.

For the record though, World Health Organization guidelines are no solids before 6 months, by which time you are safe to give them just about anything except honey and shellfish.

you can get gluten free farleys rusks although they are full of sugar. (even the reduced sugar ones are still 20% sugar). Still shouldnt be given before 6 months though regardless of when you start weaning.

p.s. all rusks are full of sugar, not just gluten free ones
