HELP, my DD is nearly two and i am still feeding her with jar food (7mnth and 10mnth) and breakfast she is still eating baby porridge, doesnt like weetabix, she doesnt seem interested in our food (except Chips, toast and lunch items), she pokes at our food whilst we are eating, but when you offer it to her she isnt interested, Should I carry on trying? any helpful hints would be wonderful. Also any hints on getting her to drink cows milk?

You could try adding "real food" to the jars - eg add extra carrots to a vegetable based jar, mix it up and build the quantity up gradually so she doesn't notice too much. Also lots of praise just for trying something different.

Agree with shazronnie try using the jar as a pasta sauce or add finger sized veg alongside and phase it out. Perhaps do this for one meal and share a portion of whatever you are eating for the second meal. tbh if you don't offer an alternative she'll eventually try some but at least she'll have eaten something that day. Then aim to only give non jar food. Can she not have toast and yoghurt for breakfast instead of cereal sometimes ?

Give her her own spoon to try to feed herself too - maybe choose a special plate and cutlery for a big girl ? How much milk does she drink and in what - offer cows milk in a cup instead and you may find that although she'll drink less her appetite for food will increase.

have you tried real porridge instead of instant? or even readybrek?

is it the texture or taste she dislikes?

why not try real foods with a similar texture to jars to start with eg mashed pot and mashed avocado, humous, lentil soup, yog etc

also, How about serving a tiny portion of jar food (to get over initail hunger) then tiny bowls full of 2 or 3 other things like mashed / or finger food. could you turn into a game eg feeding dolly or teddy's tea party to get her intersted.

good idea to mix jar with real food.

my dd 2, 2yo-still has the organic fruit pots. they're just fruit and she has them or a yog as pud.

My dd was like this - would only eat cheesy parnip bake. She did like finger food though. You could try toast etc that she can pick up and feed herself and gradually phase out the jars. She may like cereal that she can pick up (eg cheerios). My dd went straight from jars to "proper" food as she disliked mashed/chopped food.

She is still fussy though I'm afraid to say!

Good luck

DD1 was like this, she would only eat jars and would'nt drink cows milk till a few months ago, we mixed the cows milk with half formula and reduced the amount of formula evry 2 days until she was on 100% cows milk. As for the jars have you tried making your own and putting it in the jars. DD is still fussy and only realy likes finger food, she hates trying new food unless she has seen it on tv

Thank you for your great suggestion, I will try them straight away.

LGM, Are you feeding them to her straight out of the jar? Is that how she knows whether it is jar food or real food? Try just putting some dinner in an old jar.

lucyjanesmum · 24/08/2006 06:40

No i feed her from a bowl, I gave her 1 spoon full of mince, potatoes and gravy, she wouldn't eat anything after, all she kept saying was no, as for the milk it seems to be working, I only give her milk in the morning and evening.

if your dd really likes finger food you could try only finger food for a week or so (so that she forgets about the jars) and then slowly introduce 'non' finger foods. I think whilst jars are on the scene it will be difficult to introduce anything else. Whatever you try don't give up, it will take time.

Just a quick update still on jars dh on holiday so cant do anything!, but dd is now on full fat cows milk!
