Is cows milk ok at 9 months??

Just that really. My dd is bf twice a day and is a pretty good eater.
I'm going back to work in a fortnight and just wanted to try her on cows milk as there will be some mornings I'll have left for work before she's awake.
I don't want her on formula (no abuse please, just a personal choice) but didn't know if it was bad for her to have cows milk? Is there a reason you're supposed to wait til 1 year? She eats plenty of dairy in her yogs, cheese, sauces throughout the day.
Many thanks x

but cows milk is no the best milk for her at that age which is why we dont understand why you are so against formula. You might not want to give it but it is the optimum milk to give if you are replacing breastfeeds. If she doesnt have formula on surgery days then what is the issue?

its not poison

Lyns22 · 03/03/2014 09:41

I know its not poison. I just really persevered (through all the stress of having a blind dd) and tried my best to bf and I did it so don't want to take a step back.
I'm taking beaches advice of waking up dd before work then giving her lunch time feed at tea time then another at bedtime. She'll have water at nursery. Thank you

as long as you now have a plan in place. Hope all goes well with future op's

I'm sure that will be fine, at that age dc2 was only feeding twice a day anyway, well done on your perseverance

Stick with your guns OP, and good luck! I am breastfeeding twins (7 mths) and not using formula due to the cost of buying for both of them and feel that a few b/feeds a day plus weaning food is quite sufficient. At 9mths your baby shld be getting enough from 3 feeds a day and food. Best of luck with it all (ps. On a lighter note to some of these posts, love the fact that you will have to WAKE UP your baby before work, unfortunately mine are up bright and early!!!) x

Thank you beaches, I am stubborn!
And the only positive to having a blind baby is how much she sleeps! Obvs daylight doesn't waken her woohoo! X

the only reason I was concerned is that in your OP you said she fed twice a day and then you planned to replace one feed with cows milk so only leaving 1 breastfeed which wouldn't be sufficient at that age. If you are going to give 3 breastfeeds then that is a much better plan.

Powerhoop I just wasn't sure if cows milk was bad for dd at her age full stop. I understand its not and won't. I would have always tried to feed her at least twice even if they were both evening feeds. Sorted now. X

A lot of times people say to me 'I don't know how you do it', as I have 2 older dcs and now twin babies. To have a little baby who is blind, and to be able to breastfeed and to work, and make light of your situation, well I just hope that people in your life tell you that you are amazing! X

Lyns22 · 04/03/2014 10:03

Thank you beaches. She is a tiny treasure (literally tiny, 9 months and 12 pounds) so easy to be optimistic. Good luck with your twins, I would have loved dd to be a twin, built in best friend! X

I think the confusion is that formula is simply cows milk which is modified to make it more digestible for infants and a bit closer to human milk.

If you go back a bit, to advice given in the 1980s, it was OK to go regular milk any time after 6 months. So you are unlikely to do actual harm. But it is suboptimal, for reasons given above, and strongly advised against nowadays.

Would you consider a having some feeds formula as well as some feeds cows milk? Or try goats milk (different composition, meant to be more digestible)? Or finding one of the old recipes for modifying cows milk (commonly in use before mass production of modified infant milk, but not possible to verify which recipes give adequate results)?
