Accept a big drop in oz per day or speak to GP?

My DD is almost 7 months (ff with neocate) and I'm doing the tradition method of weaning by preparing puréed meals. She took to the neocate fine at 4 months and I'm not giving any dairy with puréed meals.

I started off with some baby rice and fruit purée after her normal bottle in the morning. I then introduced dinner. I've not tried lunch yet as I'm having a real problem with her rejecting her bottles..

A couple of months ago she would happily have about 30oz a day, but today has been the worst so far. She's taken 19oz in total which is a record low!! I don't think it's her gums as she's happy to suck on the teet whenever it gets blocked. The minute I unblock it and the milk flows again, she rejects it.

Do babies go off milk when getting weaned? I'm trying to teach her to use a sippy cup and she loves having water out of it. Although most of it ends down her rather than in her mouth!

I'm just not sure whether I should introduce 3 meals a day and accept her drop in milk or should I see the GP? This is getting me really stressed out now as I'm so worried she's not getting enough milk Sad

Thank in advance

20floz is the minimum so if she's taking 19, she's almost there. If her gums are hurting, try her with some ibruprofen and a teething gel, like dentinox.

I think you are right not to introduce more solids, 3 meals isn't recommended until they are between 8 and 9 months.

When you give dinner, are you doing it roughly an hour after her bottle? If you are really worried, there's no harm in giving no or just one meal a day for a couple of days.

My DD is also on nutramigen 2 due to milk allergies and we are under the hospital dietician as I've been struggling to get her to take milk especial now she has 3 meals a day. She just would rather eat. I was advised that aslong as she has 16oz a day this would meet all her needs and if she was having a bad day milk wise to add a scoop to her food. I now add a scoop to breakfast dinner and tea as she doesn't notice it in her food. Perhaps you could try that if you are worried? Or ask your GP to refer you to your local dietitian? If you google nutramigen you can find a recipe book with nice foods to make using the special milk. Hope that helps I know all to well how frustrating this is!!

Thanks. I usually give solids in between bottles, so if I give her, her first bottle at 8:30, I'll usually give some fruit at say 10:30. Then trying a bottle at 12:30. Is this too close to her next feed?
I don't think it's her gums as she'll happily suck on the teet like it's a dummy if it gets blocked...!

I think its just too close to her next bottle. If her first bottle is 8.30, try her breakfast at 9.30. Could you make sone porridge with her milk and add fruit or fruit purée?

LindsayS79 · 28/01/2014 21:50

Thanks
I actually didn't give her any solids at all today to try and see if she would be hungrier for milk. Nope!! She was even worse today and point blank refused the bottles from the word go. I somehow managed to get 18oz down her and I plan to do a dream feed to see if she'll take a couple more oz.
The HV is coming out tmrw but I'm not sure what they can do. It took me an hour to settle the poor soul for bed tonight. Normally she's so easy to put to bed, I'm thinking there must be some discomfort for that to happen!
Thanks again.

Sounds like she might be under the weather. Are you sure its not teeth? Does she have a temperature?

LindsayS79 · 29/01/2014 13:05

I'm hoping it's just her teeth. The HV has just been and said she thinks her tummy might be causing her discomfort so she might be getting referred to the hospital regarding her reflux. I thought those horrendous days were past us Sad

If she is having reflux symptoms, has she ever been checked for tongue tie?

LindsayS79 · 29/01/2014 21:24

They've always refused to check when I've asked, based on the fact she's bottle fed and put on weight through it all after she was put on gaviscon. I'm going to see another GP on Friday who used to be a paediatrician so I'm going to insist she's checked.
Such a shame if it has been tongue tie all along as I had to give up breast feeding early on because she wasn't thriving at the start.

It certainly is worth getting it checked. The HCP who have said that she doesn't need checking as she is ff and putting on weight might benefit from some training as tt can interfere with weaning and speech, here.

LindsayS79 · 29/01/2014 22:18

Thanks for that link. She certainly has a lot of those symptoms... Fingers crossed I get somewhere on Friday. Thanks again.

Might be worth contacting milk matters before Friday and seeing if they have any tips for your appointment Smile
