Sandwich fillings for a 7 month old???

My little girl loves toast and hates being fed from a spoon so I thought sandwiches would be a good way to get a more bulky and nutritious lunch in to her. I've tried cheese which she liked but what else can I give her in a sandwich? Thought of tuna but it's a bit dry, can babies have mayonnaise? I have no ideas for good, non-processed sandwich fillings for this age. Help!!!!

When DS was that age, he loved cream cheese with chopped dried apricot. What about mashed banana? Peanut (or other nut) butter? You can get ones that are sugar free. You could make you own houmous (so less salt that shop-bought) or beany mash/pate.

My two liked tuna/salmon mashed up with cream cheese, avocado, and mashed up egg when they were little.

Won't eat any of it now I actually HAVE to send them to nursery with packed lunches, mind you!

Wraps and home made cheesy/veggie muffins etc are options too.

Cream cheese is a great idea! Egg and also homous I think she'd like too, thank you! Did you do any meat fillings at this age? She doesn't have any teeth yet so I'm not sure what she could manage but I'm aware that she should probably be getting more protein.

We're veggie so DS never had meat so can't advise you on that! I wouldn't worry too much about protein though, presumably she's still having lots of milk? That'll give plenty of protein.

Yep Philadelphia (or supermarket cream cheese) is great.

For tuna and similar you can also mix with Greek yoghurt. Found full fat Greek yoghurt great for this, also stirs into warm food while cooling it down. (Eg bologna use, cheese sauce).

Have you tried giving her her own spoon/ preloaded spoon / piece of bread/ rice cake to world/dip/distract if you want to spoon feed her.

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/01/2014 09:43

For meat we always have a roast on sundays so ds got finely chopped leftovers from that. Less salty/processed than supermarket ham.

ilovepowerhoop · 29/01/2014 09:49

babies can have mayonnaise as shop bought stuff will use pasteurised egg

Antidote · 29/01/2014 09:55

What about mushroom pate or other meat pate like chicken liver or smooth Brussels pate? We did home made chicken liver pate with minimal salt.

Or minced chicken breast with mayo or cream cheese?

Another absolute winner for us was meatball wraps.

Following this thread as have an 8mo who I want to give sandwiches to as well, but no idea what he can have on them! :)

wintersdawn · 29/01/2014 10:38

at that age honey is the only no go for sandwiches. I always try and have one sticky thing in them so they don't fall apart to easily hummus, mayo or banana and as far as combinations go it's whatevers in the fridge. my 9mo has some very odd combos but doesn't seems to mind Smile

wafer thin ham works for him if you are after meat ideas

Woodifer · 30/01/2014 14:39

I know it's uncommon but don't think you're meant to give honey before 1 yr cos of risk of infant botulism.

ilovepowerhoop · 30/01/2014 14:43

that's what the pp said, that honey is a no go for sandwiches at that age.

Girl339 · 31/01/2014 14:33

Thank you so much for all the suggestions, tuna with cream cheese and also hummus went down very well! I'll definitely be trying all of the other suggestions too :) Also good to know that she can have mayo!

Oops sleep deprivation re honey!

BikeRunSki · 02/02/2014 15:49

Avocado
DS's first food was a tuna mayo baguette which he grabbed out of my hands at 26 weeks.
Cream cheese can be a carrier for all sorts of things chopped up or grated; ham, tomato, grated hard cheese
