Fruit Puree

aussiemummy1 · 22/01/2014 14:45

DS is 6 months and has only had pureed vegetables to this point.

I want to start DS on fruit purees, what flavour combinations/brands can you recommend? Confused
Interested to hear all of your thoughts on introducing fruit into his diet.
Thanks

At 6 months he can eat pretty much anything so introducing fruit is fine. Have you thought about adding a bit of finger food too? Maybe give him some mashed banana on a spoon and a finger of cheese or toast to hold?

If you are after recipes, have you checked out Mn weaning recipes? The Mn weaning info is pretty good too Smile

Pear and apple are the best ones to start with and so quick and easy to just mash down with a fork and some water Smile

Thought I'd better put a link to the foods you are meant to avoid here Smile

Thanks so much for your help. Feels like there is so much information out there it is overwhelming...

Should I be more adventurous with things like pineapple or keep it simple?

Also I have always made everything myself as I feel guilty buying the pre-made purees (preservatives etc). Are they really “that” bad or should I just get over myself?

thanks so much for all of your help Smile

aussie - they're not "bad", but they do tend to bulk out with more water than you would if doing it yourself, so they can have less nutritional value than homemade. No problem in using them every so often though (there was a research paper published to that effect last year).
You can be adventurous if you like, although be aware pineapple is quite acidic so might give him an upset tummy (my DD's nursery won't give her kiwi or pineapple for this reason, even though she happily scoffs it at home)

If you are feeling overwhelmed, try to keep to websites you can trust, MN obviously and MN weaning recipes, kellymom, nhs and the baby led weaning site might be worth a read, if only to give you an idea of some things to try Smile
