Blw and the stokke highchair

sheeplikessleep · 17/01/2014 17:33

So ds3is nearly 6 months and myattention has turned to high chairs.

I'm attracted to the sturdiness and longevity of the Stokke.

However, I would like to use the tray, as I remember (from last time) just putting shoes pie or mash or spaghetti Bol on the tray last time (we had a Chicco over padded thing last time, which I don't want to endure again!)

I have a friend who is happy to lend me the baby seat thing and tray. So we would only need to buy the chair itself. But, will the tray get trashed? Ie stained etc? Or is it fairly durable tray?

I don't fancy having it right up against the table until ds3 is using plates for the really messy meals!

Maybe the ikea one would be better.

Any experiences really appreciated - thanks

We used the Stokke pushed up to the table. It was fine (did both kids.)

I would always put food in a plate or bowl though, no matter what sort of highchair I had.

Twinsplusonesurprise · 18/01/2014 01:17

I used a cosatto padded thing to start with and put food on the tray. When DTs then used plates happily we bought stokke copies - much much cheaper and DTs love their big seats now.

SavoyCabbage · 18/01/2014 01:35

I used the ikea one and then the stokke pushed up to the table for dd2.

I used the stokke with all the trappings with dd1 and it was a bit of a pain.

sheeplikessleep · 18/01/2014 07:42

Thanks for posting. Can I ask SavoyCabbage in what way was it a pain?

We have 2 stokkes, one for each DS, I just used them against the table, as other poster said I always used a plate or bowl too.

Never had any problems, DSs are 8 and 6 and still use them so in that respect they have been amazing value! The cushions have gone a bit threadbare in that time though.

SavoyCabbage · 18/01/2014 08:37

I just felt like there was too much of it with the tray on. The feet stick out at the back and the tray at the front. The harness part was leather so was dirty in no time. The whole thing was awkward to clean and dd never looked comfortable in it. It sort of overwhelmed her.

Once they are sitting at the table it's brilliant, but before that the ikea one was much better for us.

notjustamummythankyou · 18/01/2014 08:46

You can buy a tray that is made to fit the stokke tripp trapp. Its not made by stokke and kind of goes against their ethos but I found it very useful in the early days.

I have trouble linking on my phone, but look on amazon for the Playtray to fit stokke tripp trapps and you shouldsee it. Its a bit pricey at around £50 but mine is now 5 years old, on its 2nd child and still going strong. There might be some on eBay too.

tiredteddy · 18/01/2014 08:47

I've been using a stokke for dd now 1. Not had a tray. I've just bought a childrens placemat and clipped it to the table with those plastic/ or metal tablecloth grips that they use on outside table at restaurants. She then can't push the mat off the table. I can put food directly on it and have recently introduced a bowl/ plate now she's older.

notjustamummythankyou · 18/01/2014 08:54

See if this works:

playtray

One thing: if you go for something like this and buy secondhand, make sure the play tray fits the plastic baby set. I have the old babyset which is a wooden bar with a leather crotch strap. I'm not sure if our tray would fit over the new plastic version.

We have a stokke for DS1 (not BLW, mash + finger food) and just pushed it up against the table. He's still using it now at 2.5. For DS2 (forcibly BLW as won't take a spoon) we have the ikea one as we're skint. I have to say I much prefer the ikea one. I think it's much better value for money and is easier to clean and disassemble. Also it comes with straps whereas the stokke you have to buy every sodding bit separately.

JanetAndRoy · 18/01/2014 09:11

We loved the Stokke chairs. DSs are now 8 and 5 and still sit at the table on them every day.
We had the wooden baby set, but not a tray. They used plates, bowls right from the start.

sheeplikessleep · 18/01/2014 13:09

Thanks all for posting, v useful thankyou.
I'm tempted to go with the ikea one and see if the mood takes me in a year or so. Thankyou

Surely you are supposed to use a bowl/ plate regardless of if on tray or table? Otherwise when do they get one? What do you do with soup/ porridge/ casserole? Even though we didn't blw they were fairly confident with a spoon before a year

Bowl/ plate never tipped over or thrown and it encourages manners IMO. What would you do in a restaurant?

MyNameIsKenAdams · 18/01/2014 13:18

Cannot recommend the cheapy ikea highchair enough

Washable, cheap, light, can take the legs off and throw it in the car.

Amazing.

RandomMess · 18/01/2014 13:22

I would go for the ikea one - you can dunk the whole thing in the bath if need be. My eldest was such a clean and tidy eater, then I had "normal" dc. I would have hated to have to scrubb my tripp trapp clean!

Bearwantsmore · 18/01/2014 13:30

We used a "tiny diner" mat on the table which worked well.

sheeplikessleep · 18/01/2014 14:12

Maybe I need to invest in some sort of suction thing. Ds2 just threw the plates on the floor, until a certain age, so I just used the tray, but maybe I am alone in this slovenliness. They are both fab eaters now and v well behaved with good etiquette Grin.
I can't remember when we introduced the plates exactly, but I know we didn't at the start of weaning. We stuck to 'cleaner' foods like veg sticks, bread etc when out during this time.

sheeplikessleep · 18/01/2014 14:14

With casserole and porridge, we did use a bowl, but I had to keep a close watch to stop it being thrown.
It was the thicker foods like spaghetti Bol that he loved grabbing and I just put on the tray. It seemed to avoid the fact he was more interested in the plate!

We tried tray with Stokke amd found there was a gap between edge of tray and baby's seat, which I could seebeobeing used to post food. So we sent tray back and pushed Stokke to table. Plastic table cloth can be easily cleaned, and a mixture of using plates or food straight on the cloth depending on my and ds mood has worked well.

DM has the ikea chair and that works great too but I like how the Stokke fits under our table and looks neat.

So basically, either optoon works

HazyShadeOfWinter · 18/01/2014 14:19

Option. Obviously.
Sorry

theyoniwayisnorthwards · 21/01/2014 19:20

The Stokke is lovely, but it's awkward to clean and with my oldest I felt like I was constantly scraping bits of weetabix off it. For my second child we bought a Stokke and an ikea cheap thing until he's less messy. I still love the Stokke chair for my 3 year old, for his age it's perfect.
