Going backwards with weaning . . .

My eight and a half month old daughter started weaning at six months and took to it immediately. She would try anything and was quite happy being spoonfed and also feeding herself sticks of broccoli etc. However, she has been suffering with a cold, and, since recovering, is really difficult to feed. She refuses to be spoonfed and, despite the fact I have offered her all manner of finger foods (vegetable fritters, omelette, pasta with a sauce, toast with a variety of toppings, home-made chicken or fish fingers) she rarely has more than a mouthful. She used to gobble up her morning porridge but is now totally disinterested.

She has also naturally cut down on her milk intake so I am beginning to worry that she isn't getting enough calories.

I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions about how to encourage a baby to feed themselves, or how to get them to eat from a spoon . . . I try to make mealtimes relatively social as she seems to respond well when others are also eating and she is at the table with us (which isn't always feasible).

Thanks so much x

Has she had her ears and throat checked scott? If she's on formula, is she getting 20floz a day?

My only advice is not to panic. One DD at about same age stopped eating. I took her to GP as I was worried. She literally would eat raisins yoghurt and satsumas. GP said as long as she's regularly drinking and weeing she's ok and just don't worry and don't fuss.
She's now 2.5 and some days she doesn't eat and some days she does. Sometimes meal times are a battle but I try not to stress about it - it's hard though isn't it!

JingleJohnsJulie - yes, I took her to the Dr and he said not to worry (as if that's possible!?) and that as long as she's taking fluids she's fine off solids for a while. She's taking about 21oz of formula every day with the occasional need for another 5oz overnight. I just worry that she we were making such good progress and have taken giant footsteps backwards.

Twinsplusonesurprise - I'm glad it's not just me!! It's so hard, particularly when you spend ages lovingly preparing food only to see it thrown to the dogs!

Thank you both for your help - it's very reassuring to know I'm not the only one! xx

If her ears and throat are fine and she is getting her 20floz a day then I'd not worry. Has she moved over to follow on milk? Sometimes the added iron can suppress their appetite.

Instead of lovingly preparing her meals, could you give her what the rest of the family is eating? That way is just a little if what is already there and you feel so bad if it goes in the bin.

She won't starve herself so just ignore any fussiness and assume that if she's not eating! she's simply not hungry Smile
