My baby is 7m and she is my 3rd child. My first 2 weaned well and it was quite straight forward. However when I put food into my new baby's mouth she sticks her tongue out - which i think is a reflex action - and no food seems to go in. I spoke to the HV and she said I was giving her too much milk and I should cut down (she's on 4 x 8oz a day). She said definately some food was going in. I tried this today but the food just wouldn't go in so I gave up and then gave her milk. There is no way she would do BLW as she is not interested in putting the food into her mouth. She is very hungry at the end of a bottle and her poos are really yucky. Any suggestions?? I have tried porridge, puree (home made), yoghurt and banana. thanks

When you say her poos are yucky, what are they like? It does sound like she's not yet meeting the signs of readiness.

Could you talk to your HV about your dd still seeming to have the tongue reflex or maybe your GP?

My baby didn't ear anything at all until 10.5 months. I wouldn't want to go against what the health visitor says, but there is no way I would have cut down his milk if he wouldn't eat yet!

I gave him more milk, whenever he wanted it.

He started eating when his tongue-thrust reflex went away.

My ds is nearly 8 months. He only 'got' the concept of eating and swallowing solid food last weekend. Before that he was exactly the same as your dd and pushed it out with his tongue.

Some babies just aren't ready to eat solids until they're 7/8months. She will get it eventually so keep on trying.

Until then you need to keep her milk intake high - don't cut out any feeds. Remember, she's not refusing solids because she's full on milk, she's refusing them because she isn't developmentally ready to swallow yet.

Also, my ds has gone straight on to 3 meals a day. He loves food! But only a week ago he was pushing it back out with his tongue
