Ds is six months today we have been trying bits of veg and bread in the last week or so which he has sucked and nibbled on but mainly thrown on the floor Grin he is bf and feeds regularly still and I am happy to carry on bf. Saw hv today and was told blw not recommended and he needs to be on three meals a day and getting protein. should I start offering meat now or see if he starts eating a bit more first. he has no teeth so it will be gummed or sucked.

He doesn't need to be on three meals, and he'll be getting plenty of protein from your milk, just as he has for the last 6 months. But give him a nice strip of steak or chicken and he'll gum it to death, which is fun to watch anyway

Hmm. Your HV seems to be telling you things that don't match with the NHS official advice - see this web page for specifics. In particular, the NHS advice is to be moving towards 3 meals between 8-9 months, and there is no specific mention of protein as vital at 6 months. Protein will be found in your baby's usual milk anyway.

The NHS advice doesn't specifically name BLW but it does clearly say to let your baby feed themselves with their fingers as soon as they are able. That doesn't seem to me to be saying that BLW is not recommended!

Perhaps you could show her the relevant sections of that web page and ask her why she is saying something different?!

I gave mine chicken to suck, steak, lamb bones. Chicken wings are good if you're very very careful. Pork works too, sausages and bacon.

Lamb chop pork chop etc

Thanks for reassuring me, I was happy with what I had read and was doing but she just made me doubt myself for some reason. I will carry on as planned and see how he goes !

A well worded letter to her supervisor pointing out the disparity with her advice and the nhs guidelines and maybe recommending some further training sounds in order here. When they say daft things like that, I always worry that they will tell someone else who doesn't laugh or ask on here.

There is some very good advice on here already and Ex is spot on. You might find so how do we get started with solids helpful as well.

As for protein, there is no reason not to give it, we just gave them what we were having but I do agree that I would only be offering food once a day at the moment and about an hour after a bf Smile
