Innocent smoothy

Should I give it to my 10 month old, she tasted mine and loved it ?

A taste won't hurt her but it's crap really, full of sugar. Much better to give her real fruit.

Hunnybunn72 · 04/12/2013 15:57

Oh gosh, I thought that was the point of it that it was pure ??

hermioneweasley · 04/12/2013 15:59

It's sugar in a bottle. Give her a piece of fruit

Shallishanti · 04/12/2013 16:02

Hunnybun, that's exactly what they want you to think!

JRmumma · 04/12/2013 16:05

The sugar in it is fruit sugar not added sugar so its fine. As with juices though, the issue is that the sugars have been 'released' as the fruit is no longer whole, so not great for teeth to have too often.

lilyaldrin · 04/12/2013 16:10

What's the difference between fruit sugar and "added" sugar then JR? They are still bad for your teeth and make you fat!

lilyaldrin · 04/12/2013 16:16

50 calories and 10g of sugar per 100ml is the same whether it comes from 100ml of coke or 100ml of smoothie. The argument for smoothies being better is that they have more vitamins than coke, but of course it would be better to get those vitamins from an actual banana.

hermioneweasley · 04/12/2013 16:22

As I understand it, the vitamin benefit is neglible as the liquidized fruit doesn't stay in your digestive tract long enough to absorb them.

Shallishanti · 04/12/2013 16:33

not sure about that HW, or how would vitamin drops work?
However, sugar is sugar. Maybe treat the smoothie as food rather than drink and save it for a treat? Best drink for your dd is water or milk.

JRmumma · 04/12/2013 16:33

Added sugar or coke has no nutritional benefit whereas fruit does, that's the difference. A whole piece of fruit is better as the sugar in that wont be as bad for your teeth but smoothie will have vitamins, minerals and fibre in it. Sugar doesn't have any nutritional benefit on its own, whether that's the stuff contained in fruit, milk or coke, but what 'sugary' food you consume it in is what matters.

Sugar listed as an ingredient (not in the nutrition panel) is what we need to avoid.

lilyaldrin · 04/12/2013 17:11

The tiny amount of fibre in a smoothie (1g for every 10g of sugar) doesn't mean it is worth drinking all the sugar!

ilovepowerhoop · 04/12/2013 17:16

even if you give pure juice it is still advised to dilute it with water so you reduce the sugar content. I wouldn't give smoothy to a child of that age.

JRmumma · 04/12/2013 17:22

Ok lily have a coke instead then Grin

Smoothie is essentially pureed fruit, babies have that all the time. I repeat, if it has no sugar added to it, its fine for them to have, but not every day. And i wouldn't give as a drink either, just a treat.

lilyaldrin · 04/12/2013 17:31

I wouldn't give a baby either a coke or a smoothie! There is very little nutritional difference between them for the amount of sugar consumed - it certainly isn't true that a massively sugary drink is fine for babies/children because they get a tiny amount of fibre along with it.

lilyaldrin · 04/12/2013 17:34

Pure apple juice has a similar sugar/calorie content to a smoothie btw, with slightly less fibre and loads more vitamin C. I doubt many people these days would argue undiluted fruit juice is a healthy option for a young child.

JRmumma · 04/12/2013 17:38

I appreciate what you are saying lily but i don't think OP is suggesting giving it as a main drink, just is it ok for a 10mo to have some.

I'm not saying we should be playing it fast and loose with sugary food/drinks for ourselves or our children. But to suggest that a fruit smoothie (with no added sugar) is nutritionally equal to a coke is just wrong, im sorry.

Hunnybunn72 · 04/12/2013 19:53

So I won't let her have a sip of my smoothy anymore, in fact I won't drink it either !!!

I just didn't know how else to give her fruit, she won't eat it whole.

NewBlueShoesToo · 04/12/2013 19:58

Have you tried giving her grated apple? Dd2 loves it. If you add a bit of orange juice it doesn't go brown so quickly.
I spent most of my pregnancy drinking innocent smoothies!

Shallishanti · 04/12/2013 23:15

mashed banana- all our dcs weaned on it- very convenient as it comes in its own packaging and you can mash it easily with a fork

clairikins · 05/12/2013 12:01

Give them water and fruit. Not fruit juices/smooties because they prevent them having water or milk which they need
