7 month-old's meals...

Hi everyone, weaning is going well with my DS and he seems happy with every food we offer him which is good. However, I'm just interested to see what sort of things other MNers are giving their DCs of a similar age?

DS has baby porridge and bottle at breakfast.

A bottle for his elevenses.
Lunch is usually fruit and a bottle.
Tea is some of whatever we have (meat, veg, potatoes etc) or if we're having something not suitable for him then he has a baby food jar. He has some milk to drink with it too.
He then has a bedtime bottle.

He is a very happy little boy and is gaining weight well and on target (75th centile).

Just curious about what other babies are enjoying!

My dd has literally just turned 8mths she usually has boob at 6ish then ready Brek with formula with fruit purée in and maybe some banana, lunch is either lightly buttered fruit loaf or cheese spread sandwiches with blueberries, yogurt and baby cheese, dried mango (combinations of!) bottle at 2.30, boob for a gulp or 2 at 5ish dinner is whatever we have made baby friendly, stir frys, pesto pasta, roast dinners, spag Bol,roast veg, fish cakes, then bottle at 8 for bed, then boob at night! And water with every meal.

Jiltedjohnsjulie · 09/12/2013 07:41

Didn't bother with baby cereals as they are so expensive, they had things like ready brek mixed with puréed fruit, berries or chopped banana, toast with different spreads, sausage and beans or blueberry pancakes. Dd has always been particularly fond of crumpets with butter or just fruit.

There's no need to offer 3 meals yet either. I'd carry on if it suits you but I wouldn't increase the amount of times you offer solids for a good while yet. The nhs recommend moving to 3 meals a day (a meal is classed as offering any solids) when they are between 8 and 9 months. It's also recommended to offer their usual milk feed roughly an hour before the solids so mine used to have a milk feed at 7am and breakfast at 8. It doesn't matter if they don't eat but it can have a huge impact if they don't take enough milk, which is why the nhs are keen that parents don't offer too much solids too soon. If you are ffing the minimum your Lo should be having is 20floz per day until they are one.

Lunch could be things like eggy bread, a sandwich, soup, tinned sardines on toast or leftovers -and we usually gave them what we were having for dinner. What sorts of things are you classing as unsuitable for your Lo?

If you are stuck for ideas the Mn recipe section is good and there are some great recipes here Smile

We are on porridge with fruit for breakfast. Lunch/dinner is puréed fruit with yoghurt, veg with cheese sauce, rice crackers, bagel, veg sticks, scrambled egg, soup, custard, rice pudding, toast and hummus. We are at 7 months and on 3 small feeds. Milk an hour before food. Hasn't dropped any milk feeds, digesting fine.

Just starting to introduce meat, lamb stew last night. Trying to move to having dinners we're having for ease/variety.

Hi folks, am I right in thinking that, provided there's no sugar or salt, my 7 month old can try anything?

Don't want to hijack but am finding weaning a bit of a minefield. I think I'm going too slow but am scared of progressing Sad. At the moment she has boob for first 2 feeds, then bottles for the next three and boob last thing. I give her some solids (sweet potato, carrot, banana etc) about an hour after the first bottle as lunch but that's it for now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile

I think you've not to add salt and avoid high salt foods (like ready meals etc). I don't think you can avoid salt altogether - it's in bread etc. Also - I think same with sugars, avoid high sugar foods or where it's unnecessary (like dont add to custard, watch out for it in yoghurts - Greek yoghurt -and fruit instead if petit filous).. They'll get natural sugar from fruit.

Hope that makes sense. I was trying to avoid all salt too and it's hard. Think you keep diet low salt easily enough though.

Jiltedjohnsjulie · 09/12/2013 15:38

Agree with emma you can't avoid salt altogether but you can do simple things like add salt at the table to your meals if you want it and swap your stock cubes to low salt ones.

Also agree with offering natural yoghurt mixed with fruit. Things like petit filous are way too sweet for little ones.

How old is your dd Lizzi?

Lizzids · 09/12/2013 15:59

Thanks guys. My DD is 7mo and is able to put food in her mouth. We've been giving her finger foods and purees but we're still at the 'first tastes' stage.

I've seen people say on here you can just give your baby whatever you're eating, but what about things with wine or spices in - when is that ok?

Jiltedjohnsjulie · 09/12/2013 16:13

I gave things with wine in as most of the alcohol will have been burnt off but I do know that not everyone feels the same Smile

As for spicy food, if it curry or chilli couldn't you just mix some natural yogurt with it?

I never really did "first tastes" with dd as it seems to be a hangover from the days when babies were weaned at a much younger age. I just figured that if she could pick it up and it wasn't on the foods to avoid list, there was no reason to not give it to her.

Don't worry either about just giving solids once a day, the nhs don't recommend moving to 3 meals until they are between 8 and 9 months although you could start offering solids twice a day now if you choose to Smile

What are you eating this evening? Could she try some?

Lizzids · 09/12/2013 17:04

Thanks Jilted that's really reassuring.

I haven't decided what we're having for dinner yet but there's a good chance it'll be a shop bought pasta sauce, so I won't be giving that to her. I think that I'm just going to relax a bit and go with the flow. Grin

Jiltedjohnsjulie · 09/12/2013 17:08

How about planning something to share tomorrow evening? If you've had pasta tonight maybe toad in the hole, bangers and mash or a Spanish omelette? Things like casseroles and pasta bakes are good because you can hopefully prepare the dish while they nap.

Lizzids · 09/12/2013 17:55

Good idea. Thanks Jilted Smile
