Breast feeding vs essential weight loss- confused!

I've exclusively bf for 6 months and would ideally like to continue bf throughout weaning, perhaps beyond, however I 'm overweight to the point where I worry about my health (type 2 Diabetes for instance), and feel that for my family's sake as well as mine I need to get into some committed exercise and weight loss programme. The problem is no diet I've found, or my GP, will recommend dieting and bf simultaneously. I can 't work out which way to go, bf or diet. I don 't necessarily want to be told, just wondered if anyone else is in this dilemma too. And please be nice, I'm feeling delicate about it and sometimes posting on MN you're throwing yourself to the wolves. Thanks :)

It's perfectly ok to aim to lose a bit of weight steadily through healthy eating while bf. Milk supply wouldn't usually be affected unless there was a huge massive drop in intake - think massive famine rather than usual slimming diet.

Eg cutting out cakes/sweets/extra snacks that are mainly empty calories anyway. However, I would have found it difficult as I was so damn hungry while I was breastfeeding. I understand Slimming World accommodates bf mums, not sure if WW do too.

I think you can do weight watchers when dieting? They adjust your points to accommodate bf.

you can diet and breastfeed - I am doing it now by cutting out crap food

Marks Daily Apple site has lots of nursing mums and advocates a natural, wheat and sugar free, lots of veg fruit protein and fat way of eating which has great weightloss and nutritional benefits so you could search the site there for info :)

I've upped my activity and stopped buying biscuits! I go easy on carbs and eat healthy whole foods, but that is not enough, I feel hungry and overeat when bored stressed or emotional. Food choices aren 't the problem so much as compulsive eating, which is why I feel I have to tackle my excess 3 stone with a radical diet- which I then hope to maintain.

Thanks thismenow I'll look into the WW bf programme.
