Petrified of choking. BLW a no no?

Hi all
DD is 5 months and is a refluxer. On the advice of my GP, I tried her with baby rice and she hated it. I mixed in some puréed banana with it and she wolfed it down!

Anyway, I'm starting to think about weaning for when she reaches 6 months. She shows such an interest on me eating and I always let her have a sniff! I've let her lick a banana recently and she tried to grab it and suck on it properly!

So I'm thinking that BLW might be good for a grubber like her! Only problem is, is that my dad died from choking while eating and it's made me PETRIFIED of it happening to my DD. Am I best to avoid BLW? Is it a bit stressful watching they don't choke? I've not read up on it yet as I was always planning on normal weaning but now I'm in two minds.. Can you do both? Or has it got to be one or the other?

5 months too young for banana whether purée or blw.

All babies grab and put things in their mouths.

How awful what happened to your poor father, if mealtimes are a potential stress because of that I would do pureesetc to start. It doesn't last long the purée stage anyway as soon as they get the hang do it you mash instead of purée mad then chop instead of mash, but may make it less stressful for you

Good luck and sorry again re your father

the gag reflex is there to stop them choking. BLW is good because your baby is in control of what she puts in her mouth, how far it goes in, how much she chews off...

i've BLW 2 of mine and neither have choked

personally i think they're more at risk once they're older and go through that phase of shovelling as much as they can into their mouths Grin

no reason why you can't give her banana either

Thanks all. I'm going to order the book and see if that eases my mind. I'm sure it will. My GP said its messy but excellent for their speech development too so she thinks it's worth a shot on my part.
I'm very conscious of not showing my fear in from of DS though as I want her to be as an adventurous eater as I was/am!!
First aid is an excellent idea, I'll look up what's on in my area.
