Is there any reason why a 2 year old shouldn't be allowed to gorge themselves on olives?

because ds absolutely loves them, and as he is a fairly poor eater and they are 'healthy' foods i would be delighted to let him go for it. So far i have been restricting him a bit based on some vague notions about possible saltiness, hard to digest etc. Anyone know any better?

DS also likes olives, but I restrict them too, as they are salty (although may depend how you buy them?), and also too many could lead to a very sore tummy (at least I find they do with me, so expect they would for him!!). I'd like to know whether I'm right or not too Vitomum...

i'd like to know the answer to this as well, please? anyone?

DD loves them.
I try to rinse them first to get some of the salty brine out and allow her a few at a time.

FrannyandZooey · 09/07/2006 11:23

Usually very salty

my ds loves them too but they reappear quite quickly in the nappy (looking black and scary)

he is also very thirsty if allowed to eat more than a few so I try to restrict him.

dd used to spend holidays eating nothing but olives when she was 2-4

didn't seem to harm her

Cappo get back to that other thread, our nosiness is killing us...............

zippitippitoes · 09/07/2006 12:32

surely they are only salty if packed in brine? or marinaded in a salty preparation

I would have thought otherwise they were very healthy..I'd restrict them on grounds of cost but I would think a dozen would be ok

FrannyandZooey · 09/07/2006 14:36

I think they are virtually always cured in brine, zippi. If you know of a sort that is not, I would be interested to get some.

cheers all. and so the consensus is none of us really have a clue but we'll fead 'em them anyway (but not tooo much)

Yeah, olives are high in iron and will make them constipated if consumed in very large quantities!
