Nearly-6mo chewing on crusts of bread - is this okay?

I know according to the BLW philosophy everything is pretty much ok from 6 months on but for some reason I feel a bit uncertain about my DS (who will be 6 months next week) gnawing on a crust of bread which is what he's been doing happily for the last 20 minutes. I was going to start him on solids next week but he was so grizzly at lunchtime today and kept grabbing at the sandwich in my hand so I relented and gave him a bit of crust to chew on. He is SO happy.

Is this ok from a choking and/or nutritional POV? He's my second child so I probably ought to know this but I honestly can't remember at what stage I gave bread to DS 1.

Yes it's fine. They say from 24 weeks is ok. az

Totally fine dry bread and buttered toast were some of the first things my DD had. Now she's 10 months and eats EVERYTHING!

Oh lord, i'm so confused, i just read no wheat before 6 months!

Ps she gagged but never choked. I leave her to it if she gags and she sorts herself out. Having seen a choking baby you will instantly know the difference. I think a certain amount of gagging is needed/expected for them to learn the ways of solids.

is not advised to give gluten/wheat before 6 months (which is 26 weeks, not 24)

ilovepowerhoop · 15/10/2013 16:31

if your lo is a week away from 6 months I am sure it will be ok

Great, thanks all. I'll just let him get on with it then!
