Why not give fresh fruit?

sparker22 · 26/09/2013 20:40

sometimes fresh fruit seems to go off/mouldy really quickly and I'm getting fed up of throwing it away...so thought maybe tinned??

My dd loved tinned fruit in juice at that age. There's no reason why not apart from the snob value. There's more of a variety tinned and you can give as much as they want and save the rest without it going off.

You could buy less and give him more? Alternatively portion it up and freeze? Smile

I give tinned fruit. Yes, fresh is better but we went through a phase when DD was about a year old and a bit picky and she coped better with the softness of tinned fruit. We don't do it all the time but we still do it. She loves fruit cocktail, has a thing for the cherries! I also do it all the time for tinned mandarins as she just doesn't like fresh mandarins.

Sometimes she has it quite a lot depending on what is in season, how much the fresh fruit she likes costs etc. We make sure to buy the ones in fruit juice not syrup and then drain them. Probably still more sugary than fresh fruit but hey, it's fruit. IMO there are worse things!

How about frozen like berries etc? Is tinned fruit a bit sugary, I love tinned peaches but they're in syrup I suppose

I've only really just started baby led weaning so we probably aren't up to 'normal' baby portions yet, think we are more at the 'try a little of each and see what she likes' stage. she's only really had at the moment 1/4 of banana, 1 or 2 strawberries, half a raspberry...so figured tinned would last longer, at least for now, when she's eating more at each meal time I think I'd give her mostly fresh fruit (depending on the cost! sometimes its really expensive! Confused )

I think it's fine. I've just bought some for my DTS - they love pineapple but I find it goes a bit fizzy if you don't eat it fast enough. As long as it's in juice, it's just as good as fresh.
