new to solids, need advice

Hi, new to Mumsnet

just started my LO on solids. so far just tiny amounts of pureed banana and sweet potato, mixed with ebm. also, she likes sucking away on a rice cake. but banana seemed to make her really constipated, so we stopped it. just sweet pot for the last few days, but even this seems to give some tummy ache. have others experienced this? she is 24 weeks. we just try the solids at lunchtime, and it really is only a tiny amount, and I've skipped a few days altogether. the rest of the time, she's excl. breastfed.

thanks for any advice
Nikki

hi wondawn welcome to mumsnet

I am still very much a learner on the weaning myself - my dd is 8 months now and still taking to solids very slowly, but yes banana does sometimes seem to bung her up a little.

Dont worry at all about skipping days, as at this stage I think its all about just trying different tastes and textures in really small amounts and getting used to using mouth to swallow.

My dd loves pear - I think its quite easy to digest and gum down if nice and ripe.

hi vondawn, my lo is 22 weeks and we've not really thought about solids yet. sounds like your doing great tho, i think the idea of trying a new taste every few days is so that you can tell what, if anything, upsets them. so if you think she's not too good on banana just leave it out for a few more weeks.
i do have an older child too tho, so if you've any specific questions, i can try to answer - or i'm sure others will be along.
have you tried joining the postnatal group for the month she was born? my dd was Jan, and i only joined the group recently but they've made me v welcome.

thanks!
Amber5, I would love to just know how you got on with weaning your older LO. it's all so new to me. sometimes I think I may be rushing her into it. she definitely wants to eat the food, but the tummyache makes me think her insides may not be ready yet? I really want to do BLW. but when she does get a lump of anything in her mouth, she gags. however, she loves feeding herself puree on a spoon. we just pass it to her, we don't put it in her mouth for her - i guess this is still BLW?
i will check out the postnatal group.
thanks also bumbleweed - I was thinking pear would be a good thing to try next. do you feed your dd puree or whole bits?
many thanks!

it's terrible how quickly i forget, but basically i just gave him a little taste of pureed fruits and vegetables one at a time at first. he never had any bad reaction to any so we never needed to cut anything out. i gradually increased from one to three meals over a few weeks. by 7mo i can remember doing a mammoth veg steaming each sunday and freezing different combinations in little bags to last throughout the week. we also started to eat much more healthly as a whole, as i was more aware of making fresh veg etc so he could eat what we were having.
with my 22wo dd, i have so far given her a taste of mashed potato and a few days later squashed banana, both quite spontaneously. i really wanted to wait til 6months as she's still sleeping thru etc.
was your dd born in Jan? - there's a few on that postnatal thread who have posted about blw. i must admit, i thought it sounded interesting but i haven't got round to reading any further about it...

vondawn, we are doing baby-led weaning, so cut everything into small chip-shaped pieces - read about it on here, if you do a search of archived messages you should find some info
