Hello out there. My 10.5mo DS will not eat anything lumpy or any finger foods I give him and is quickly going off certain foods like his cereal etc. Am starting to really worry as he's not a large baby anyway.
When presented with finger foods he just throws them on the floor and gags / throws up when given lumpy food. I know he wont be on puree food forever but when/how can I help this phase along?? thanks

ds was like this. he was on really smoothe purees until 10/11 months and only very slightly lumpy purees for a good few months after that. he also goes off things if you feed them to him more often (he still does that and he's 2 and a half).

you'll get there in the end. have you tried melty type finger foods like rusk and soft oven chips? also is he as bad when other people feed him and you're not around? ds is still a fussy thing, but he eats. he eats better for other people.

My DD is a bit like this too. She's 12 mths now and still won't eat sandwiches for me at home but wolfs them down at nursery. Same with some of her dinners too. She still likes her cook dinners to be quite mushy, lump free and creamy at home, but is slowly improving.
I've found she won't eat a sarni, rusk, etc that is made/given to her, but will happily chew on the crust of my toast or finger feed veggies off my dinner plate. Maybe its because it's more relaxed? Might be worth a try.
Don't worry about pushing it though, he'll do it in his own time.

my dd was like this. give her what she will eat. in time she will come around and eat lumps again. My stopped at 9 months or so and just started eating again at over 12 months. She is also a petite little thing.

Apparently they go through this stage at 10 months, it's just a certain type of development so I would say don't stress, but I know easier said than done. If your lo was born August 2005, join us on the postnatal thread for a bit of support, here . Have you taken the transition from puree to lumps slowly, eg just mashing finely at first, then mashing less? Or try adding well cooked rice to things as it's so soft?

I've tried him on over cooked mashed up pasta added to very smooth puree and that seems to be going down. Think the singing and over indulgent praise is helping, he likes to see me clowning around for his entertainment! I'm ignoring his gagging and just encouraging him.
He wont eat for anyone else either but will try what I'm having or what another child is having. I think that if he were around other kids more often he'd be better.
Thanks for all the advice, I had no idea babies went through a fussy phase at 10ish months so will keep that in mind in future. Thanks again!

Ds was the same. I now put the finger food on the highchair tray and then carry on pottering around the kitchen and not looking directly at him. Works a treat!

OR sometimes I start to eat it and then he thinks I'm going to eat it all so he grabs some!

But the best one of all is he'd rather it was under the sofa and covered in fluff. Because then it's guarenteed to end up in his mouth.

LOL... so true
Not sure how he doesn't gag on all the fuzz that seems to end up in his mouth but does on lovingly prepared food.
Will persevere. But have tried eating his food and he just lets me! this has landed me with a gym pass! as I end up eating things that will go off like bananas or full fat yoghurts - ARRGGHH!! Am sure he's laughing at me when my back is turned!!
