My lo had bad skin and was mucosy in the early weeks of breastfeeding till I cut out dairy, now we're weaning at 6 months and we don't want to introduce cows milk yet but are there other ways he can get a sort of yoghurt or source of calcium?!

If it's not a serious allergy then you may do well on Lacto-Free yoghurts, my DS ate kilos of them!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/08/2013 23:49

huga has Lo been allergy tested? It might be worth doing as then you could get access to a Paed Dietician. In the meantime try this FB group for lots of product tips Smile

There is calcium in salmon so things like salmon pasta and fish cakes are good, sardines, try sardines on toast and in baked beans so beams on toast or beans and sausage are always a winner unless you live with the worlds fussiest eater who gags when you give her beans.

Thanks twelvelegged, are those baby yoghurts or general lactose free ones?! I saw some I the supermarket yesterday but was nervous as they weren't for babies and said low fat which I thought was a no no. Do you have a brad you could recommend?!

Jilted how do I get to a dietician, GP it health visitor or do I hunt one out myself??! Do you know at what age salmon can be introduced? Just over 6 months old now.

Muchos gracias!!!

Yes the brand is called lacto free, it has a cow logo. They do four packs of yoghurt, chilled and uht milk and soft and hard cheese, and I think cream, which were really useful in weaning. Now ds has grown out if it he's into normal stuff. Often had to go to waitrose or a big sainsburys to get it though.

ilovepowerhoop · 29/08/2013 18:47

lacto-free yoghurts dont contain lactose but breastmilk does so if your lo is ok with your breastmilk but not with cows milk products then you would really be looking at dairy free yoghurts (no cows milk protein) rather than lactose free (lactose is the sugar in milk).

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 29/08/2013 18:47

Alpro soya yoghurts were what we used. They're really tasty. Tesco and Asda do own-brand dairy free yoghurt in their Free From ranges now too, or you can buy big pots of plain Alpro yoghurt and add your own puréed fruit if you're bothered about sugar content being too high.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/08/2013 19:53

TheGirl are soya yoghurt s ok? I'm sure I've read somewhere that if you suspect CMPI you shouldn't give soya until Lo has been tested as babies allergic to cows milk can often be allergic to soy. Just can't remember where I've read it though...Smile

TwelveLeggedWalk · 29/08/2013 19:57

Unless he's been thoroughly allergy tested then I'm guessing you probably won't know exactly what he's allergic to. Especially if you're breast feeding as obviously your diet is more varied than his!

We were on lactose-free (as opposed to CMP-free) formula (plus some BM but reducing percentage) so that's why it worked for us. Also the stuff seemed tasty and much less salty than some dairy free options, so if you wanted to avoid soya it might be worth a try - I imagine he'll let you know pretty quickly if it isn't working for him!

Wot no dairy has lots of calcium in it. Available in Holland and Barratt or in bulk online, they are soya free too.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 29/08/2013 20:13

Yeah,Jilted, we were told to be vigilant for any signs of soy allergy but Dd was fine - luckily as I think avoiding soy is harder than avoiding dairy.

Thank you all! Will look out for the holland and Barrett ones and maybe move to get an allergy tea so we understand what we're dealing with! 💐

huga you can give salmon from 6 months. The only foods you should avoid are listed here. Think its the tinned salmon that is particularly high in calcium so making a sandwich or fish cakes should be a good source.

This kellymom article is very good at explaining the difference between lactose intolerance and cows milk protein intolerance, so that might help you get your head around it a bit more Smile

This allergy uk article suggests going to the GP and asking for allergy testing if you suspect CMPI. It also tells you how to prepare for the appointment and what to expect from your GP Smile. Once your Lo has been allergy tested, if the results are what you expect then I'd ask the GP for a referral to a paediatric dietician.

If you are bfing on demand and your Lo is fine with it, I wouldn't worry too much about cramming calcium into him or finding alternative yogurts just yet. Your BM should provide all your Lo needs at this age Smile
