That's it really. Oh with milk too if you bottle feed.

Ds doesn't cost much...today he's had:

Breakfast -porridge with whole milk and half a fruit pot (30p?)
Lunch - cheese and cracker and a yeo valley yogurt plus some skips (30p?)
Kiwi fruit (15p)
Dinner - lentil and sweet potato mash (his own bowl then all if dd's Blush) (10p?)

And he has ff at night one box every couple of months as he only has 5oz.

I don't think he costs me much he usually eats dd's left overs too so less waste Grin

He will eat anything that is smooth or sloppy. I put 2 raspberries through my garlic crusher today & mixed it with his porridge and he gobbled that up.

Yoghurt, sweet potato, broccoli and such like no probs, yet vomited mashed banana as it had texture.

Will keep trying as you advise x

Why do you care? Has she asked for your help to reduce it?

Hamwidgeandcheps · 13/08/2013 20:56

I'm not sure. I buy strawberries and cucumber and avocado extra for 9 month old dd2. When I was first weaning it was nothing but she's eating a lot now! She's costing me in sausages too!
The only baby food I buy are rusks and I don't get through a box a week.
Might be around a fiver extra a week maybe little bit more

forevergreek · 13/08/2013 21:06

Hmm no idea, at 8 months maybe an extra £10 a week.

That was breastfed so no milk, but extra avocado (£2), Greek yogurt ( £1.50), fruit ( £2 ), fish ( £5).

The above was extra from what we brought anyway, they just ate a few spoons of veg/ carbs from what we cooked

JiltedJohnsJulie · 13/08/2013 21:51

Can I fed her baby for a few weeks and keep the cash? Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 13/08/2013 22:02

God I really must be bored, I've being doing some maths again.

The revommended amount for a baby of that age is roughly 600ml per day of first stage formula, if she's not bfing. Boots sell 1 litre of ready made aptimil for £3.29. That's £13.16. Add around £2 for the extra 200ml. Lets be generous and say Lo drinks more than the 20floz so add another £3.29. That makes £18.45. Add that to the £45 on pouches and I still don't see where she gets £80 from unless she's giving it Bolly to drink Smile

Was she complaining about the £80 or just mentioning it?

sharond101 · 13/08/2013 22:11

I've never considered DS (1 5mo)to cost me anything as he eats mostly what we eat. For him only I buy blue topped milk (£1 for 2L), weetabix (£1.49 for 36), apples and pears (£1 each per bag), sweet potatoes (89p per bag), rich tea biscuits (29p per pack) custard powder (15p per pack) and the odd flump (9p). I've never considered this extra cost as he is of course part of the family so part of the family food cost.

cleoowen · 14/08/2013 09:38

I seem to spend £80 a week on food just for two of us and ds, I don't think he adds much to the cost though as spent this before but really trying to get the cost down but find it hard. We end up with nothing in the fridge for the last week either and dh moaning about it. I can't understand why we spend so much.

Prob do two big shops which are between £80 to 100 and then a.couple more little shops. I shop in tesco or Sainsbury so not waitrose. We do buy lots of fruit and veg, meat and fish and nappies and toiletrees. Dh only likes quite posh lunches so buy smoked salmon occasionally, humous, pate and we get through alot of branded cereal as neither of us like the own brand stuff it's yuk. I do try every month to spend less but it doesn't happen. Started buying frozen fish and fruit to try and cut down.

cleo if you eat premium brand cereals, smoked salmon for lunch and only shop in Sainsburys or tesco, its not hard to work out where the money is going. Bwhy not get your nappies and toiletries from Lidl or Aldi? lidls muesli and smoked salmon are very nice too Smile

sharond101 · 14/08/2013 22:09

cleoowen you should try Aldi their own brand cereals are really good. They also do posh stuff like hummus and smoked salmon.

IslaValargeone · 15/08/2013 08:48

Regarding the reasons I asked. She wants to be a sahm but is returning to work part time because she says she cannot afford not to. She told me about the cost of feeding etc etc and I thought it seemed quite steep? I didn't feel in a position to suggest that maybe she could make some cutbacks and thus stay at home with the baby a bit longer until I'd sussed out what it costs these days to feed an 8 month old.
It seemed an enormous amount to me but I thought I might be really out of touch.
Thanks for your feedback though.

It does seem a lot. Surely the baby would be just eating pretty much whatever the parents are eating by 8 months? I know that my DC would have roast dinner with us at that age for instance. Plus I suppose as I bf that is free!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/08/2013 10:15

Get her on here Isla. We can tell her what she needs to do if she wants to cut back. Using cartons of formula, family food and washable or Aldi nappies would probably be a good start Smile

MyDaydream · 19/08/2013 10:51

1.5 tins of baby formula a week at £10.99 a tin. I buy him a massive bag of Tesco Value oats a fortnight for porridge fingers, they cost about a pound. Then a pint of milk a week at whatever a pint of milk costs these days. He eats whatever fruit we have in, but if he didn't eat it we would. I've not increased my regular shopping amounts for him, it's just a couple of bits I've added on just for him. So I guess £3 a day or so. He's be much cheaper if SMA comfort wasn't the only milk that didn't make him sick.
