Fish, as a finger food

I'm in the process of weaning DS2 (7mo) and want to start him on some fish.

I am veggie and find cooking fish slightly intimidating - mainly because of the bones.

I am doing traditional weaning - so purees and finger food, but would rather offer fish as a finger food rather than a puree (pureed fish! Yuck).

So where can I start with this? Which fish is best and how should I cook it? My toddler cookbook suggests fish fingers, but DS2 is allergic to wheat/gluten and egg, all of which feature quite heavily in the recipes. FIsh cakes or fish pie are a no-no as DS1 won't eat any form of mashed potato (and ideally I would like a dish they can both eat to avoid spending all day in the kitchen).

Thank you!

Gluten and mash free? That is a toughie. How about tinned salmon sandwiches with some Freefrom bread?

I'd try poaching some salmon fillets. Very little chance of bones, and lots of healthy oils. Once cooled breaks into nice finger food flakes, so can serve as finger food platter with cut up peppers, cucumber etc, (If you don't like poaching bake in a loose foil parcel). The flakes can also be served with pasta (if you use the gluten free pasta I guess).

Orgran no-egg instead of egg. And gluten free bread crumbs. It is doable, I promise (as a no egg, no dairy, no wheat person...)

I freeze them in boxes and just use as needed!

I think corn cakes are gluten free, you could spread tuna on them (mixed with soft cheese?) or make some pate with salmon, mackerel and butter

Chunks of salmon and haddock on kebab skewers with chunky veg like courgettes and grilled.
14 month old DS loves these!

And if you go to a friendly fish counter, they'll deskin and debone and chop the fish for you to save you having to squeamishly handle it too much!

Kedgeree is another favourite in my house! Flaked smoked haddock, peas, sweet corn, rice, korma paste and a little bit of cream.

Andifyou buy it from asda they will seal it in a bag which you can cook it in, so no need to handle Smile

I realise it might not be to everyone's taste, but DS adored sushi from a really young age; might be worth trying if you're out one day - I think his choice may have been influenced a bit by loving the Yo Sushi conveyor belt initially, but he will still choose sushi in a "no belt" restaurant!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 09/08/2013 20:24

Thanks for all these suggestions! I am very happy about the Asda man who fillets, skins and bags the fish ready for the oven! :)

I didn't realise there was such a thing as no-egg, will check it out, thanks RNJ. Just out of interest, which gluten free bread do you buy? I have been getting Genius but it's a bit cardboard-y. Are there any nicer ones out there?

Orgran no egg and orgran whole grain gluten free bread mix, both from amazon in bulk! Orgran are fabulous for gluten free and vegan stuff.

Waitrose do a good own brand gluten free bread too.

I'm veggie and we're doing BLW. DH is not veggie so he preps and serves all meat and fish. Is this an option for you? They don't need it that often.

forevergreek · 10/08/2013 16:19

I would just give bits of salmon/ haddock/ seabass. You can chop a fillet into 1/3 and freeze the other bits for another day. Just take out the eve before and pop in fridge , then cook.

not finger food but my daughter absolutely loved the annabel karmel plaice with cheese and spinach. I pureed the sauce then flaked fish really small (now she eats big chunks of fish with he sauce on top but she's 13 months now, she started having this at 6 months and loved it)
