Fresh fruit feeder netty things

Hi - I picked up one of these gizmos as I had been considering a similar item on amazon and this was much cheaper. I thought it would be ideal for smaller/softer fruit such as strawberries or brambles that DD (6months old) can't pick up yet. But I am having no luck with it! DD shows no interest in putting it to her mouth unlike every other item that lands in front of her & unless you stuff it really full, it seems hard to steer (so to speak!) but filled up it is a bit top heavy.

Does anyone use one successfully? Is it worth persevering or trying again when DD is older?

Nope, I got one for dd2, total waste of money she would rather chew the handle. I thought it might be good for ice cubes while teething but the opening wasn't big enough to get a reasonable chunk in that would last more than a minute. Good idea in theory, rubbish in practice.

Doodledumdums · 29/07/2013 21:39

I got one too and DS doean't like it. I did find it quite useful for ice cubes, but you have to make them fairly small to fit!

Personally I wouldn't bother with it.

Just give her large chunks of soft fruit e.g. large strawberries, banana, peach, pineapple, ripe pear.

By the time she is about 8-9 months she will probably be able to pick up individual small fruits such as raspberries, blueberries and halved grapes.

I got one for dd 6 years ago, she hated it as did ds and my nephew. waste of money imo

LifeIsSoDifferent · 29/07/2013 22:02

I got one for my DD and it was a complete waste. She much preferred picking it up and tasting it herself but wouldn't eat at first but my DN has one and he loves his and it works a treat so I think it's each baby to themselves

mrsmartin1984 · 29/07/2013 22:57

They are a terrible idea. How on earth do you get them clean? If you want to puree food puree them. If you want to do BLW do so. This is an awful mix of them both. It's pureeing by other means for people who think they want to do BLW, but are too worried about them choking. And some people think they are safe and you can leave babies alone with them. WTF?

abigboydidit · 30/07/2013 06:46

Just to clarify mrsmartin I at no point mentioned choking. I thought it might help her taste new foods which are too fiddly for her and am a sucker for a gizmo. But thanks.

Well, a different perspective from me: we're doing BLW and my DS loves the mesh feeder. I use it to get him to eat soft food such as avocado or very ripe banana, which would otherwise be too slippery for him to hold. He is very adept at sucking the flesh & juices through the mesh, and seems very happy to do it. Occasionally he is more interested in the handle and uses it as a teething ring, but that's fine too. So I don't really understand all the hostility to this device. After meals I stick it in the washing machine along with his bibs etc, and it comes out perfectly clean & ready to use again.

Don't know about the Nuby feeder but we're using a Clevafeed by Clevamama. The pouch thing is silicon rather than a mesh so I think less likely to tear and easy to clean.

DS (7mo) was confused at first but I helped him and he got the hang of it. Use it for banana, pear, mango but wd prob also work for veg and meat.

Helps him learn to chew as he gums down on it, and also his hand-eye as he can now pick it up and put it in his mouth.

He also gets finger food which he plays with, but at least with the Clevafeed i know that he's actually eating the stuff too.

So overall v pleased with it.

Oh and it comes with a cover so i can take it out and about altho haven't done that yet as it can still be pretty messy...

Thanks. I maybe just need to try again in a month or so Grin
