Possible Dairy Intolerance...how to tell?

I think that my DS has a cows milk intolerance, I have given him formula with cows milk 3 times and each time he has projectile vomited it all up 3/4 hours later. I am currently weaning him, which is going really well, he loves his fruit and veggies! And this is also taking some pressure off of me because I have been exclusively expressing for 5 months!

So my question is this, I have bought some baby oatmeal with milk in it and I would like to give him some to test to see if he does have a problem with cows milk (I eat lots of dairy and he has no problem with my milk...) SO should I give him this oatmeal and try it, or is this torture on my little one???

How old is your lo? Accepted advice at the moment is not to move to cow's milk until baby is at least a year old - maybe too much, too soon?

He is 5 months...I don't want to give him a glass of milk :) Just formula or cereal with milk ingrediants in it

TBH, I would say that the only way to tell is with the help of your gp/specialist and a properly done exclusion diet.

Can I ask why you had formula with cows milk? This sounds like an odd combination to me and maybe that is why? Or perhaps it is simply to early for his stomach to take it yet (everyone matures at slightly diferent rates) I would be tempted to back off on any real cows milk and stick to just packets etc where there is milk in the ingrediants. Try reintroducing cows milk in a few weeks time.

um, if something made me projectile vomit, I don't think I'd be in a hurry to eat it again.

How about trying formula in cereal if you want to stop expressing?

You can try the cow's milk again in a couple of months if you're not sure that was the cause.

Some people recommend avoiding dairy until 12mo if there's a history of allergies/eczema etc in the family, but otherwise it is ok from 6mo in cooking but not to replace bm or formula as a drink.

If you eat lots of dairy and he is ok with your milk then I wouldn't think it is CMP intolerance. My DD has this and reacts if I have eaten dairy.

Maybe he just doesn't like formula as your milk is so much nicer!

From what I have been told on here, there is a test which can be done after he is given formula containing CMP. CADS is very good with advice in this area, so hopefully she will be along soon.

Have you also tried ringing your h/v to ask her?

Maybe start with the a little baby rice first, mixed with formula or EBM - weaning cereals have very little in them to upset little tummies, and so would go that route first - or alternatively try to a diff formula as it may just be that.

As he is still quite young for weaning I would lay off the formula for a while...
My dd was allergic to formula at 5 months ( came out in a rash all over her body) but by 18 months she was guzzling cow's milk.

oh just re-read your OP. Does "formula with cow's milk" just mean standard formula, not soy-based or whatever?

If so, I would see your GP about it.

I think racheee is just using formula ladies, not actual milk, but formula does contain cows milk protein unless it's a special one on prescription. Am I right racheee?

Ahh, I think I se what you mean now - you mean Cows milk based formula right (I hope Grin)

Babies are good at projectile vomiting! I would start with your HV and see if they have any suggestions, if you get nowhere and it is still happening then move on to your GP and see what they have to say.

I repeat though, probably the best course of action would be to leav it for a few weeks and then try again, this often seems to sort out most weaning troubles with very young children. (IME)
