Where can I find guidance about what my 10 month old should be eating?

I'd really like some info on:

  • recommended portion sizes
  • how much in the way of solids
  • how much milk

DS currently has 5x bf, breakfast of yoghurt + fruit puree, lunch of small sandwich with cheese, fruit and water, dinner of a little of ours mashed. Is that right? I'm looking to cut down on the bf, do I need to replace each bf with formula at his age, or does he not really need 5 milk feeds a day any more?

You'll probably struggle to find any official guidance but at 10 months, that sounds about right to me.

As you're bf'ing you'll never know what he's getting so if you are looking to drop feeds then replace those with either food (snacks) or formula.

The LLL have an advice line and should be able to advise on a plan.

I didn't want to drop bf as wanted dd to naturally wean but at around 10 months I started to offer food first, bf after. I also started to give snacks mid morning and mid afternoon - such as sultanas, apple, banana, cracker and cheese etc. she'd have bf out of habit rather than hunger but eventually she dropped on her own accord by around 12 months and was feeding roughly 3 times a day (morning, later afternoon and 11pm - rough times).

Whilst advice is to not give cows milk as a full drink until 12 months, a little cup of it was given to her from around 11 months if I wasn't around.

Hope this helps Smile

As for portion size - offer what your having on a small plate or bowl and keep giving more if he eats it.

If he starts throwing it away or appears not interested, then he's not hungry.

I'd recommend you read Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapely - it's a really good read and will help you understand how children learn to eat the right foods by giving them choice and responsibility, even from an early age.

I literally gave dd whatever we were eating (we eat a fairly balanced diet) and if she turned her nose up, so be it.

I have a 10mo also bf. I have no idea if what she eats/ drinks is right but i'm trying to be all relaxed about it, and given her energy crawling and climbing everywhere she seems fine. she has

7am bf
7.30 breakfast porridge with cows milk and fruit

10.30 snack - eg fruit, rice cakes, crumpet and drink of water. This was a bf but dropped it in last few weeks

12- lunch eg sandwich, savoury muffins

3- bf - a big one! And then a snack to follow

5.30 -dinner, whatever we had last night or will have eg spag Bol, stew, fish etc. she feeds herself. Fruit or yoghurt

6.45- bf and bed at 7

She wakes 2-3 times did bf over night. I think she is slightly backwards as she has dropped so many feeds in day but to be honest I'm back to work next month so this suits as she won't take formula and I really don't want to pump.

Sorry if that's long winded but interesting to compare I hope. I started offering food before bf at 8.5 months and then started feeding her only when she asked (by pulling my tip down) and we dropped bf feeds this way. So it was totally led by her.

Agree, think you will struggle with official guidance. There is some good information on kellymom, nhs and of course mnSmile

They can self regulate at this age, especially if you bf on demand and give them finger food. If you are wondering on portion size it should be about the size of their palm.
