Spoon refusal

Hi
My baby is 25 weeks old and we started weaning her with purée's about 3 weeks ago. Initially she opened her mouth and would accept food and actually swallow it. I had also introduced a formula feed at night about 10 days before. Then after 5 days of weaning, she started being sick everytime she had formula and now refuses a spoon with food on. She'll play with a spoon put it in her mouth empty but with food on clamps her mouth shut and has a melt down. My HV has advised me to go down the BLW route just not sure how that will fill her up initially as she'll just play with food I imagine?
With regards to the formula not sure if it's linked to weaning or whether it just doesn't agree with her. Have been using Aptamil might try Cow & Gate comfort!
Has anyone else had issues like the above!?!

We had a very similar situation although DS refused the spoon from the start. So we tried blw and I'm so glad we did as it worked really well for us.

I think you need to adjust your mindset about weaning, though. The early weeks/months of weaning aren't about filling them up, they're about them trying different flavours and experiencing different textures. I think this is the case however you wean though it's perhaps more pronounced with blw.

Yes, she probably will just play with the food initially but that's not a problem. She still has her milk for nutrition. When she's ready, the playing will turn to eating. I found blw took the pressure of both of us as mealtimes became relaxed rather than a battleground. But you do need to be able to accept that it doesn't matter if they eat very little.

If full on blw doesn't appeal, you may find that once the pressure's off and she's been able to explore the finger foods, she accepts the spoon again.

Agree with yarg. My dd was a total spoon refuser. We could have gone down 2 routes. Give her a bit of what we were having and let her try it or make her scream every mealtime while I tried to forcefeed her with a spoon. Went for an easy life and did option 1 Smile

If you think she has a problem with the formula could you try ebm? Has she been allergy tested as it may be am intolerance?

You might find this article on weaning reassuring too.
