10 month old diet

Hi
I'm not sure where to post this.

My 10.5 mth old ds is milk allergic but can tolerate soya.

I breastfeed him last thing at night, twice in the night and first thing in the morning.

Because he can't have cheese etc to give him calcium, I'm expressing during the day - even though he refuses a feed - to provide milk to give him in food.

I'm now back at work and expressing during the day is an increasing pain. I don't get any lunch break because I spend it expressing and it really wears me out for some reason.

Anyway, I was wondering what other 10 ish month children have to eat to see if I can stop expressing. Ds loves his food and eats well.

A typical day looks like this

7am - bf

8am - 3oz of ebm and about 1 oz of water used to make porridge plus about 3 tablespoons of fruit purée

10.30 - snack of yogurt and biscuit/breadsticks

12.30 - 3 oz of ebm with about 12 shreddies

1.30 - lunch of eg 4/5 tablespoons of chicken casserole, cucumber (chewed then chucked)

3.30 - 2oz of ebm with porridge

5.30 - dinner - eg 4/5 tablespoons of lamb stew, bit more fruit purée and a few sweet potato wedges

7pm - bf and sleep

2 feeds during the night.

How does this compare with your child? Could I cut out any of the ebm in the day do you think?

Do you have access to a Paed dietician and have they suggested an alternative milk for the day? Once Lo is 12 months the recommendation for a non-bf baby is 300 ml of full fat cows milk a day, so you may get away with stopping the expressing soon anyway Smile

Have you seen this? Things like sardines (with bones), salmon and dried figs are all high in calcium. I know ready brek is fortified, are shreddies too? Is that why you are offering cereal at lunchtime?

Thanks Julie. We are chasing a dieticians appt. the gp just said not to give him dairy until he was a yr and wouldn't listen when I said about giving up breastfeeding in the day.

The reason I give cereal in the day is that ds refuses to drink ebm from a bottle so it's the only way I can get milk into him!

I went back at 10 and 9 months and bf morning, on pick up and before bed. I also fed them sometimes in the night. Both of mine were bottle refusers but would drink a little from a cup in the day.

I only worked 2 says a week and I'm not trained, but I would think he would be fine with just solids now while you are at work. If you can fit in what I did he will still be having 3 good feeds a day. I would advise though that you talk all of this through with a BFC on one of the bfing helplines. It may just be that you can stop expressing now and both be fine Smile

Similarly to you I bf DS last thing, twice in the night and first thing and that's it. I don't bf during the day. He drinks water from a sippy cup during the day.

The only time he'll have milk in the day is if he has cereal for breakfast. Maybe you could just express in the evening to have enough for cereal in the morning?

My DS is nearly 11mo.

You have both made me feel a lot better! Thank you! Do your little ones eat a lot of cheese/yogurts etc though?

Also, how much milk would you express for a 11 month old for a bowl of cereal?

Mine didnt have a lot of cheese or yogurt no. DS wouldn't touch cheese until he was 2. He would eat the sardines and dried figs though. Strange child.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/06/2013 07:39

And no idea on the milk for cereal sorry, hopefully someone will be able to answer that one soon.

AllIWant85 · 10/06/2013 09:31

I would have thought 3-4oz would be fine for cereal.

My DS probably has yoghurt every other day and about the same with cheese. Maybe if you are worried about calcium you could give him a vitamin daily? My DS was poorly for a while and wouldn't eat and so the doctor said to give him a multivitamin aswell as trying food. It's the WellKid Baby drops and is a syringe application like the Calpol and Nurofen.

melonribena · 10/06/2013 11:46

Thanks again, you've both been so helpful. I usually do 3.5oz ish of milk for cereal so that sounds fine!

I'm off to tesco later to look for dried figs and sardines! Xx

Also if you didn't want to give cereal for breakfast you could cut out expressing altogether! Breakfasts here can be toast, fruit sticks, eggy bread, beans and sausage, anything really.

DS is quite happy with a little bowl of dried raisin wheats or cheerios also. Dont make life hard for yourself. As long as DS is happy and healthy then all is ok!

melonribena · 10/06/2013 12:47

You talk a lot of sense! I think my worry stems back to my early days if breastfeeding when due to his tongue tie he didn't get enough milk and I struggled to get his weight up!

I think I need to chill out a bit!

Can understand why you are anxious but 4 feeds should cover his calcium intake for the day. Like I say though you can always talk to a BFC Smile
