What signs did your LO give you that told you they were ready to wean?

Am interested to know what signs your LO's gave that made you think "aha, time to wean"?

Or did you just start at the 6m mark?

Just wondering because my 4m old DS gives me a very intent stare when I'm eating breakfast & I don't know if he's just being very nosey or is showing early signs.

I've always heard that watching you is not a sign. It's just what babies do.
When baby has full control of their head, can sit (supported) and has some hand to mouth co-ordination then it's time to think about weaning.
Also when they reach out, grab food and put it in their mouth that's a very obvious good sign!

DD swiped some cottage pie from my plate and stuffed it down at just over 5 months. So we went from there. Having them watch is good and normal so they understand, but I would hold off until they go for it tbh. I then only had a few weeks of veg and fruit purées to deal with, plus softer things to mash. We moved on to carbs and meat after 6 months. There's nothing more frustrating than purée so weeks of it would motivate me to hold back! Luckily she moved on to chunky and then normal food fairly quickly, makes life so much easier. She's still a good eater at age 3, although will dodge the veg if she can! I would wait a little longer.

Ds stared at me eating for months before I started weaning. I think he was more interested in the fact I had something in my hand rather than wanting to eat it, iykwim? Ds was 5 1/2 months when he stole some toast from me and shoved it straight in his mouth when I started weaning.

I initially tried weaning at 5 and a half months as he was sitting up and reaching for things but he still wasn't ready. He had been fascinated by me eating since about 2 months, so I definitely wouldn't read too much into that!

We then switched to blw and he just ate when he was ready just after 6 months.

When DD grabbed a had full of noodles from my plates just before she was 6 months.

Yeah I'm definitely looking to hold off on the weaning for now, but it's good to get an idea of what he's likely to do when he IS ready. He's quite the grabber at the moment so wouldn't be surprised if his 'sign' will also be grabbing food off my plate!

Scarfed a mouthful of my chilli chicken wrap before I could even react to stop her!

Mine was when ds wouldn't take his bottle because he was too busy trying to nick my chips !! GrinGrin

Picking up food and eating it. Honestly, if it was up to me they'd never be weaned, it's far easier when they are just on milk.

Being 6 months old is a good indicator.....

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/06/2013 09:44

Yes watching is definitely not a sign. Dd watched me intently while I put on make up and loaded the washer at that age but I presumed she wasn't ready for those either Grin

The sign she did give me was at 23 weeks when she picked up some food from my plate a Nd ate it. Pretty good sign I'd say.

Haven read the whole thread so sorry if this has already been linked. Watching is not a sign, the signs you should look for are here. Have a read of the MN weaning info too, its very good Smile

Thanks! That was a useful read!
