The current advice is 6 months. Less risk of allergies and choking plus they can sit up - much safer.
We started with steamed veg sticks and dd1 was well away.
The book baby led weaning by Gill Rapley is great and friends rave about Annabel Karmel books for ideas Grin

I'm sure others will post this as well but here is a link to the NHS advice on when to start weaning. As you can see, current advice is to wait till about 6 months, and certainly not before your baby is showing the appropriate signs of readiness (can sit up unaided, can pick up food and get it to their mouths and that they have lost their tongue thrust reflex).

Your DMs advice about starting at 4 months is outdated although still commonly given by older generations. I don't see the need to rush to start weaning - it's more faff and hassle, as well as having an unpleasant effect on the contents of their nappies!
