Hi Any ideas pls? We have tried giving dd parsnip, banana and baby rice. Not altogether.
We have a few goes once a day and trying a new solid every few days but she won't swallow and gets v upset...

How are you doing it? DD used to sit and eat breakfast with DH. No bowl for her, she just used to grab a bit of banana or berry. Don't bother with baby rice vile muck. If she is getting upset, change your approach. She doesn't need to get a lot down, just get used to it.

Stop for a while, then try again.

Six months is the minimum age for introducing it, not when they have to start. If she's not ready, or not keen, don't turn it into a battle.

Either that, or change your approach to BLW. Let her experiment with the food. There really is no rush.

I agree with Sir, it just sounds like she isn't ready yet - there's no magic switch at 6 months. Just wait a week or so then try again rather than trying to force the issue now. Or just let her sit with you while you eat, give her a couple of bits of food to play with and don't worry about whether or not she eats it.

Thank you. So we are going to get her a high chair. Any suggestions for first foods she could grab?
We hv been trying to feed her mushed up veg etc so far.

Try microwaved banana. It goes really soft & you can mash it into a smooth paste with a spoon. Then, maybe add baby rice or rusk crumbs, and yoghurt. Or just leave it plain.

Dd was much more interested in whatever we were eating...

Try the baby led weaning book where they feed themselves so no battles.

No need to mash anything, just give sticks of carrot, brocolli anything within reason.

My daughter is 7m and eats everything. Key thing is dont be too concerned about how much they're eating, and dont feed them hungry, it should be about play and discovery.

Willow33 · 09/04/2013 00:05

Sorry thepig but what is blw book?
Thank u for advice. She tried soft banana and the gag reflex kicked in. She threw it up with some milk!

Cant remember exact title but google baby led weaning and read up on it. Has worked wonders for us and there's some really sound science and theory behind it.

DD gagged for a week or so until she learned to swallow and hasn't looked back, thats normal.

Essence of blw...sit them in highchair, put stick size food in front of them, let them experiment and play with it and they'll eat on their own.

CornishYarg · 09/04/2013 08:49

Some of the foods we gave early on include steamed and roasted veg, pieces of fruit, toast fingers, sticks of cheese, pasta (fusilli or other large easy to hold shapes work well), rice cakes, strips or chunks of meat. Keep the pieces fairly large at this stage so she can pick them up.

The blw book is Gill Rapley's book - there's one about the principles behind it and also a cookbook which covers the basic principle as well. But tbh, they aren't necessary as there's plenty online about it and as long as you avoid foods they can't have, like honey, you can't really go wrong.

CornishYarg · 09/04/2013 08:50

Oh, forgot to mention hard-boiled egg. DS went mad for it!

Willow33 · 09/04/2013 11:29

great thank you all

We have a lobster. It makes her feel part of the family eating with us.
