Drinking water for 10 month old

Based upon advice from Mumsnet a reputable source, I started giving DS tap water in a clean but unsterilised sippy cup from 6 months when we started weaning. During his 9-12 month review today, the HV said it needs to be cooled boiled water until 12 months. Eh? This is the chlid I found yesterday surreptitiously eating old garlic peelings from underneath the kitchen cupboard and he chews on the dogs' toys if I can't stop him quickly enough. He doesn't have more than 50-100mL water a day - the rest of his fluid is from BFing. Do I have to start boiling and cooling faffy bollocks or has that horse bolted and I can carry on with tap water?

If you are in the UK and on mains water then tap water is fine from 6 months.

Ignore her :)

marzipananimal · 02/04/2013 20:18

Tap water absolutely fine IMO

MrsOakenshield · 02/04/2013 20:19

oh, bollocks to that, I gave DD tap water from 6 months not that she would actually drink much for ages, the little minx, she seems pretty robust!

McPheetStink · 02/04/2013 20:19

Tap water 6-12 months

Then can have bottles water after 12 months. It's something to do with the sodium/minerals or something Confused

MissTapestry · 02/04/2013 21:27

Screw that for a game of soldiers, one of my fave things about BF is that I've not had to do the whole sterilising malarkey! It's straight tap water for 9mo DD I'm afraid Smile

HerrenaHarridan · 02/04/2013 21:39

Same here including garlic peelings and dog toys

knitterati · 02/04/2013 21:43

Tap water! You're fighting a loosing battle trying to sterilise everything - especially when LO's find a juicy floor nugget to munch on.

FadBook · 02/04/2013 22:06

Tap water. I was giving cold boiled water too until about 7 months when DP politely informed me that DD is crawling over the floor where we walk and is sticking toys and books from the library in her mouth - a bit of tap water isn't going to be the cause of any stomach upsets Grin

Thanks!

from nhs website:

Water: fully breastfed babies don?t need any water until they?ve started eating solid food. Bottle-fed babies may need some extra water in hot weather. For babies under six months, use water from the mains tap in the kitchen that's been boiled then cooled. Water for babies over six months doesn?t need to be boiled. Bottled water is not recommended for making up infant formula feeds as it is not sterile and may contain too much salt (sodium) or sulphate. If you have to use bottled water to make up a feed, check the label to make sure the sodium (also written as Na) level is less than 200 milligrams (mg) per litre, and the sulphate (also written as SO or SO4) content is not higher than 250mg per litre. Bottled water is not sterile, so it will need to be boiled and cooled like tap water before you use it to prepare a feed.

Maybe print the NHS advice out and give it to her Grin

TheSurgeonsMate · 03/04/2013 14:09

I still remember the beautiful beautiful moment when DH told me that the NHS say tap water is fine at 6 months. The phrase "cooled boiled water" has always filled me with dread.

VisualiseAHorse · 03/04/2013 16:52

Yes - print out that NHS advice and show your HV :)

LO always has tap water. And onion peelings. And dog toys.

ElphabaTheGreen · 03/04/2013 18:54

Imagine...an HV not knowing the NHS's own advice. Hmm

(That was me being ironic.)
